Engine oil leak after oil change

We did our second oil change on the D3 yesterday - care was taken inserting the filter into spigot, putting on the O ring and tightening down the filter housing as before. Oil was put in, the engine run, level checked and adjusted and all seemed OK. Did 50 miles then found oil spray under the car at the rear of the engine underneath - 2 litres needed to bring it back up. No warning lights seen when driving / idling and the car sounded normal. The sump plug is is tightly in place, the filter housing is clean and oil free at the front where I can see. I haven't removed the filter housing yet. Is a poorly seated O ring on one side the most likely fault or should I be looking for another source of leak?

The plastic housings have been known to split, but the most likely cause is the seal damaged, twisted, or not in the correct groove on the housing. I think you will have to remove the filter and housing and have a look, if necessary get a new seal ( not sure if available without a filter) fit it, and put some oil on it, and try fitting it all again. Oh and try to mop up all the oil spillage too, easier said than done though I suspect. Thumbs Up

The spillage is on the underside of the car around the gearbox, exhaust and cross member - is the filter housing the most likely source?

If the filter (and sump plug) are the only things that have been disturbed recently, and you had no leakage like this before.....then I'd say yes, the oil would tend to run backwards in the 'v ' and then run down the back of the engine. 2 litres, that's a lot to lose, but lucky you noticed it before you lost the lot Shocked

Did you torque the filter up correctly? Was the filter oem? - if not fit a oem. Always best to run the engine and check for leaks before replacing covers.
I once had a non oem screw on filter (not on a LR) blow off and lose most of the oil 2 minutes after an oil change, the threads on the new filter where very slightly larger diameter or wrong size, always fitted oem since then, this might be the problem with the "O" ring supplied.

It was a Bosch filter - I thought that was a good make. I did run the engine for a while without covers for a while but if the leak was at the back I;m not sure I would see the leak.

I remember a mate fitting the o ring in the wrong groove on a freelander, that certainly made some mess!

I located the O ring in the groove in the middle of the thread as the Haynes manual appeared to indicate - is this the wrong place?

Did you change the sump plug though? It has a rubber seal.
I found mine leaked when it got hot, following an oil change.

new plug on ebay ~£3

. ............... The correct groove for the square section seal, has a tapered core , so that when the seal is fitted, it sits at a bit of an angle, is this the groove that you fitted the seal in Question D3 owned from new, P017 brake recall, BAS FBHIC, new FBH, LR013487 oil pump, new water pump. I removed the filter housing to find all but a 2 cm seated in the groove leaving a portion of ring misshaped. I replaced the housing and filter, gave the underside a clean up and drove around - the car still has oil in it and there doesn't seem to be a fresh leak.

And without doing any damage, assuming you haven't got a paved drive Whistle
