Raspberry like blowing Noise and Exhaust gasses in cabin!

Hi all,

After 5 stress free months of Discovery ownership, it's my turn for a problem or two.

A week after getting my rear droplink replaced, the car has started making a noise akin to a kid blowing a raspberry. It only seems to do it under load, as parked up with the bonnet open, i can't get it to make the noise to locate the problem.
It happens between 1,000-1,500 rpm quietly (loud enough for passers by to hear though), then stops until over 2,000rpm when it really sounds like my exhaust has a massive hole in it.

It seems to be coming from the drivers side of the engine bay though.

Added to the farting noise, the inside of the car smells as though a bus has parked up next to us and attached a hose pipe to its exhaust and popped the other end through the windows. At first it was only when sitting for 5 mins or so, but now its every journey.

Can someone please shed any light on what the problem might be? I know I need to get it to a garage but until I have the chance, any ideas will be helpful, especially with christmas emptying the bank as it is.

Exhaust gas smell in cabin is often the fuel burning heater cutting in especially at low speed.

The crossover pipe is the most feared outcome (isn't it over £1,000 to repair?) And I read about the FBH but the smell is not just at start up in the cold, but all the time even when its a mild day.
