Compressor rebuilds - any successes?

I've seen a few posts where it's been recommended to just replace, rather than repair the compressor.

However - I'm wondering if anyone has used one of the ebay rebuild kits successfully, and made a lasting repair?

Had a few fault codes recently which point towards the compressor. This was followed by fuse FL10 blowing. I've got the compressor off the car - dryer looks ok so I am leaning towards the seals/piston repairs.

Thumbs Up

i was forced to replace mine in the end

it was getting the thing apart without doing damage

but alas the 10mm collet on the end is obsolete , old compressor is being sent away to have it tapped and drilled , by an engineering company that is friends with my dad

the o rings underneath the collet will be old and may leak

learnt a considerable amount in taking them apart and now have a new dunlop one

still got to fit it , waiting for some new stainless steel bolts washers as the old ones were rusty and snapped

i got some extra tails for this new one, so that in the future i wouldn't be touching the original collets , was trying to think ahead ,

Used a rebuild kit on mine with success....did it approx a year ago and no problems since.

However, once I started stripping it down the problem was a hair line crack it the plastic end cap (with the pipe fittings on it). The kit came with a replacement end cap and problem solved for me.

Still followed the refurbishment procedure and changed the piston seals etc.

Took a load of pictures - if you think they are of use let me know.

Rebuilt mine 18months ago, had the hairline crack between the connections in the cap and the silica had set into a lump. Was a pain getting the exhuast line off and had to put a new piece of pipe in with a connector but it's still going strong.

I stripped and refurbished the Hitachi compressor on mine about 6 months ago using a kit from eBay.
I had the fairly basic kit that comprised seals, filters and the absorbent beads. So far, it's really reduced the time that the compressor has to pump to raise the car.

I also took Disco_Mikey's advice to purchase the captive nuts (RYH500170), some new bolts and a tube of copper slip for refitting.

Check first, if you are sure it's the compressor, Dont waste your time, buy dunlop one, its cheaper than hitachi, and fit it. If you are not sure, check first because sometime your compressor has good pressure (1600-1700 kPa) but leakage is somewhere else, e.g front/rear/or middle air suspension valve block

Good luck

Just to follow up on this. I attempted the refurb on the compressor - nothing untoward when I took it apart (I've seen pics of fully clogged dryer units, dead pistons etc). Refitted to the car, and after about a minute of operation the FL10 fuse blew again.

Bought a new dunlop compressor, fitted it (in rapid time as I am way too familiar with this procedure now!) and all is well.

Thumbs Up

that is what i did in the end

fitted a dunlop and resolved so many issues

also had to replace the front block as it was full of silica dust, but someone had taken it apart before as a spring was missing , fault was the front dropping overnight

also cleaned out the compressor filter in the back boot cubby hole

is always miserable replacing things in the cold though Big Cry
