CB - Adding a burner ??
I have a Midland 77/104 rig that on the whole is fine - I have used newer units that are better, but having read that I can get a better signal, to go further and receive further on my unit by using a linear amp what is your experience ??
I have been told to add a 35w + burner and I'll get '100% better results' - I am not convinced
Any ideas ??D4 HSE....Probably, but not quite decided yet.

As Slimer says, radio is a two-way thing. There's no point in you having a megaphone if the person you're trying to talk to can only whisper back.
Furthermore, any VSWR problems with your rig will be amplified using a 'burner' (I hate that term!). However, the term 'burner' explains exactly what will happen to your transmitter output stages if the set-up isn't perfect and you then switch it on.
Then there's the constant looking over your shoulder for the local Ofcom inspectorate who will confiscate it all from you...... The older I get, the more I realise that people confuse wrinkles for wisdom

Why not take the amateur radio Foundation licence then work your way up?
With a full amateur radio licence you can use up to 400w on hf ssb and cause wiggly lines legally
Added to that there's all the other VHF and UHF bands and repeaters available.
There are also some good amateur clubs round Warrington doing the Foundation licence I'm sure.

Amatuer radio clubs........I'd have to grow a beard and get clothes from a charity shop
I don't use the CB that often and so can live with the issue. I have invested in a SWR meter and after correctly tuning I do get a better reception now.D4 HSE....Probably, but not quite decided yet.

Well 'n1cktdv6' thought that would suit a tin snailer just fine
In my experience a good quality antenna with a low SWR reading will be just as good (I use a K 40 on a mag mount and Ham Multimode 2) with less hassle unless you are planning to speak to some one abroad. Saying that if the skip is good you don't need a burner. 8)

Tin snailer, I don't think so alanwxr. I haven't 'delayed' anyone when towing, in fact I get a bit p d off at those in front of me who delay me and those behind who think its me.
Which bit upset you; the having a go at radio clubs (no harm intended) or the fact that when you got dressed this morning you put on cords, a check shirt and a jacket with leather elbow pads, to match your beard D4 HSE....Probably, but not quite decided yet.

Sorry don't think it was me, havn't been active in a long while, my local ones were OC, SS and BI.
I've just got myself a new rig , a FT897D, not tried it out yet still awaiting on a multiband HF ariel for the RRS.
I'll have a look through my old log books when I get home and see if there is a GAV in them
Soon be back there and can raise the flag again

Since you were mentioning masts before, Do you know a certain 8LMA or CMAC as he is often called? Spends a lot of time 'up your way', usually with reels of LDF in tow.......The older I get, the more I realise that people confuse wrinkles for wisdom

What an excellent idea. I know nothing about the subject but...
One could then add a GPS receiver to a Radio in the car and transmit one's position.
