front and rear drive (prop) shaft rotational play? |
|
Hi All,
I have a very slight vibration i can feel only when accelerating (not coasting or cruising). Its hardly noticeable and there is a slight noise with it.
I've already replaced both front wheel bearings and have no 12-6 oclock or 3-9 oclock play on any of the wheels. Also, no play or knocking in any of the wheel driveshafts to the diffs.
I did sikaflex the centre rear bearing (rubber was shot) a few 000 miles ago and that seemed to help but not got rid totally.
Just feeling the play in the front and rear props, the rear has play in what seems like the splines that connect the halves together (maybe 3mm rotational), the front has maybe 1mm rotational play. There is no play in the universal joints at either ends of the front or rear prop shafts (so the play is just in the bit that allows them to shorten/get longer.
Is that play in the prop shafts normal? (i suppose the bearing itself could be gone in the rear one - but just kind of looking for more confirmation before i splash out on a new rear prop)
(D3 auto has done 117K miles by the way).
Thanks, Mike.

The rear prop on mine has what I would say was to much rotational play and the bearing rubber has what I would say was excessive lift for a small car and I reckon its new prop time, mines on 119k.
On the older coiler land rovers a rumble on the overrun is almost always the prop splines worn allowing lift and off load the thing runs out of balance, but their props are only 60/70 quid.
