FBH Performance

So I've been messing around with the FBH for a few weeks now.

http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic153037.html

I decided to swap it out today for another unit. This one appears to work correctly, it runs fine on the WTT software, no faults. it also fires & runs when connected to the vehicle when expected.

Here's the thing though, I was expecting better performance from it given it's 5KW? I'm basing my thoughts on a comparing it's performance with a household 7.5KW electric shower, which would heat a continual supply of new cold water, whereas the FBH will heat a recirculated supply & therefore increase in temperature rise quicker.

Once the flame is detected the WTT software doesn't show any heating energy. I was expecting it to show the heating energy it was creating?

It seems to take some considerable time for the FBH to have a positive effect on the engine system coolant temperature. The FBH is definitely running as a flame is detected & there are hot exhaust gases being emitted. If it was airlocked & there was no water in the system it would quickly go to overheat? I presume it's not to clagged up as it burns cleanly.

Any thoughts on it performance? Do it sound correct or is it under performing compared with your experience? If the latter, any suggestions where to look?

Thanks

Is the pump circulating the coolant ?
Metal auto sump & fluid change (3 hrs)
LR door puddle projectors (10 mins)

Hey Daz360

Yes, it seems to be. If i squeeze the pipe from the pump to restrict the flow you can feel the water flow. If i place a screwdriver on the pump & stick my ear to it i can hear it running.

I have fluid at both the bleed points on the system so presume it's not air locked anywhere.

When you say it takes a while
What's the outside temperature and how long does the Fbh run for ?

The wtt software should show the coolant temp. Typically a 30 min run of the fbh will heat the coolant about 50degC.

Guy's,

Try to answer you both.

The outside temp was about 8/9 deg & the motor was cold.

The WTT was showing the water temp, started about thirty something & rose to just short of fifty over a period of 15 / 20 minutes or so of continuous FBH power & no assistance from the engine.

Having read other posts stating the vehicle up to temp after a mile of so of driving with the engine & FBH running i was expecting more dramatic results.

It sounds as though it's working in spec, but i bit more subtle than i'd anticipated?

Thanks

Ive noticed the temp difference when engine started from cold after the fbh has run for between 20 and 30 minutes is quite dramatic 20 is ok 30 is very nice.

That is what I would expect. Initially all the heat in the first few minutes will get "sucked" out by the metal it passes through. Then the temperature of the circulating water will begin to rise faster until it plateaus. Presumably at about 30 mins.

Skagg, are you expecting too much heating too soon?

It sounds like I probably am!

The flow pipe from the FBH just doesn't seem that hot for something that can create 5KW of energy.

I might force it to run again this morning and take specific note of the start and end temperature v time elapsed.

Out of interest where is it taking the temperature measurement from? I presume it's from one of the two sensors on the housing / water jacket around the burner.

Update

So I ran the FBH again this morning from cold. The ambient temperature was 5Deg the system temp was 19Deg. In 11 minutes the FBH raised the system temperature from 19Deg to 61Deg.

I was still expecting it to be quicker, but I suppose it is after all a supplementary heater.

Either way at least i have a working unit now. I just need to get the other one working too! Mr. Green

Thanks
