Stereo head unit replacement/upgrade discovery 3
G'day every one.
Phil here from Oz..
I'm very new to the Landrover / Disco3 world as I grew up on Toyota LandCruisers!
I must say though I'm very in love with my D3 tdv6 & don't think I'll ever go back to the dark side again + I'm as green as they come when asking a question on a forum/thread thingy like this, so....
What I would like to know is..
What is the best way to achieve a dubble din touch screen (android bass if possible)
reversing camera,
satellite navigation,
DVD multiple screen display,
stereo,
Bluetooth,
Wi-Fi etc: I'm guessing you get the picture
My D3 HSE has an optical cable from a midline stereo system I'm told.. which makes it difficult to change the original head unit (not worth the effort) ?!
I'm not sure if this makes sense but if anybody out there can help me out and point me in the right direction I would be forever great full, cheers Phil.

Ok for all those who care!
I've now been told that if I replaced the original 6 stack cd player with optical wire to/from amplifier / speakers!...
I will loose my amp, reverse beepers, my clock in the instrument panel, my blue tooth phone & maybe some other things that I think are not to important!
I'm yet to confirm if I can use the original speakers when I fit new head unit..
Or if I need a new amp at all..
So if there is anything I might have missed that's especially important please let me know!

You can relocate the radio unit. I've put mine under the middle second row seats. You could then fit a double-din unit in its place. You'd have two screens then (could also remove the nav screen). It's a bit of work but possible.D3 SE with Hankook MT 275/65/R18, IID BT Tool, ProSpeed rock/tree sliders + compressor guard, RLD sump guard & winch tray + 13,000lb hidden winch, Gearbox guard, Frontrunner 80l aux tank with fuel gauge, V8 brake upgrade, Traxide USI-160 dual battery system, Frontrunner ladder, custom boot storage, Lazer LED driving lights, de-cat exhaust, Aftermarket Oro TPMS, i7 Mac Mini touch screen install (running Windows 10) mirrored on rear screens.

Thanks Nick..
Just wondering..
how did you wire up your original head unit under the middle seat?
& can you fold it flat?
& also how did you get sound out of from your new dd head unit?
Did you go through the original av in Port in the back of the arm rest?
I've been quoted $3k to remove properly the old IHU and components that are not needed but retain all the impotent optical features!?
So if you are able to give me some more direction on how you did it & how successful it has been that would be great
Ps: I don't have any screens for sat nav etc:

Sorry for the slow response. I'm currently on holiday. I used a MOST extension cable for a Porsche Cayenne cd unit and then had an auto-electrician source the JLR plugs and make an extension cable. You can place it anywhere. Even in the boot for example. I just chose second row seats for ease of access. My setup is a computer connected through the aux from the stereo but I'm sure an autoelectrician can make you up a cable as required. I paid about 200 GBP to make the DIN extension and lay it under the carpet so 3k is crazy.D3 SE with Hankook MT 275/65/R18, IID BT Tool, ProSpeed rock/tree sliders + compressor guard, RLD sump guard & winch tray + 13,000lb hidden winch, Gearbox guard, Frontrunner 80l aux tank with fuel gauge, V8 brake upgrade, Traxide USI-160 dual battery system, Frontrunner ladder, custom boot storage, Lazer LED driving lights, de-cat exhaust, Aftermarket Oro TPMS, i7 Mac Mini touch screen install (running Windows 10) mirrored on rear screens.

If you have no screen then why not go down the tablet route in the space where the screen should be? No need to move then.D3 SE with Hankook MT 275/65/R18, IID BT Tool, ProSpeed rock/tree sliders + compressor guard, RLD sump guard & winch tray + 13,000lb hidden winch, Gearbox guard, Frontrunner 80l aux tank with fuel gauge, V8 brake upgrade, Traxide USI-160 dual battery system, Frontrunner ladder, custom boot storage, Lazer LED driving lights, de-cat exhaust, Aftermarket Oro TPMS, i7 Mac Mini touch screen install (running Windows 10) mirrored on rear screens.

Yep thanks Nick..
I think I'll go down the tablet road like you said..
Moving the original IHU is just sounding to hard!
My brother found an Aftermarket android powered 7in "screen" which fits straight in a Freelander 2!
It looks like what I want & it can have many accessories added to it like, R camera, DVD, & DVR etc:
I guess I just run the audio thought the axillary in, and there for work completely separate from IHU except sound!
I'll let you know (and anyone else who would like to know) how I went!
But thanks for your help & advice.

I am now actively investigating replacing the whole crappy system and am awaiting UK quotes.
Already have cameras front and back wired in so seeking that to be integrated into a new, modern, after market all singing all dancing system including nav, bluetooth, mp3 playback, dvd and the like.
My man is proposing a complete rip out and re do. Expecting it to be £££ but I already stole the resources of a small african country to fund my disco in the first place so in for a penny in for a pound!
Will have an original D3 system complete working for sale soon too
Will keep everyone posted. D3 07 SE - still going strong
D3 07 HSE - gone to car heaven
FL1 - gone to Romania
D3 05 HSE - gone to a divorce diet
D1 V8 manual - gone but not forgotten
RR Classic - gone to car heaven
Jeeps, Lexus, X-trails... Too many to name..

Yes I understand.. But I don't have the assets to steal from a small African country
So now I'm actually going down a smaller fablet path, which means I don't have to cut any of my dash apart.
I know it won't look exactly genuinee but I'll make it look as good as possible.
So far it's looking to only cost me about $300 and I still get to maintain the original Dash!
I'm going to connect to it through the USB port, things like camera, SD/USB input & sound through the original IHU aux port.. Fingers crossed it works!
