Long time lurker but not often I post in here.
After spending £1000 getting the suspension sorted, at 130,000 miles my 54 plate TDV6 HSE has decided to blow a head gasket too.
Gutted!
Has anyone had success repairing/replacing the gaskets on these? Whats the cost if I did it myself? What's involved? Is it worth it on a £7-8,000 Disco?
Should I just throw in the towel and sell it as is for spares or repairs?
I'm not in a position to replace the car at the minute, nor have I the spare cash to just swap the engine out.
Couldn't have happened at a worse time! Murphy's law proven again

The problem is, are you sure its the gaskets....
But if it is.
Gaskets £100 minimum
head Bolts £45
loctite (end cam caps) £6
Oil and Filter
Maybe do cambelts if they haven't been done recently.
Ideal time to change glow plugs if they don't work.

Worst case, cracked block? Cracked heads?
It blew a hose off, dumped the coolant and overheated whilst my wife was driving. Low coolant warning came up and she just thought 'I'll get him to look at that.....' and then next thing the engine has stopped and there's steam everywhere.
It's at an independent LR garage now, they've tested for combustion gases in the coolant and say it's bubbling up through the bottle. They're pretty certain it's the gaskets.

If she drove it and the engine stopped on its own new gaskets are not going to fix it.
Might be worth pulling the heads for a look see, but I would guess its terminal.
Im sure your indy has a boroscope they could put down one of the injector holes, save you a bunch of labour costs.

Loss of coolant, overheating, smoke from exhaust, pressure in cooling system, bubbles in coolant, combustion gases in coolant.
I had it recovered to a local LR specialist who spent today doing checks and have told me everything points to head gasket failure.
They didn't sound keen on keeping it to repair either, said it could run into £1000s to sort it and that was if the block & heads weren't damaged and just needed skimmed.

It runs, but won't do more than 10 miles before overheating again.

Sadly a cooked engine may have screwed something else you cant see initially, so you may get away with gaskets then its bites you in the 6 months later and you are already thousands into the car.
I think before spending any money at all I would get my bodging head on and stick some K-seal in it, brilliant stuff, if it stops the bubbling even short term you can then decide what to do, but that still doesnt tell you if the K-seal has sealed a blown gasket or a cracked head etc.
We use it all the time at work mainly leaky rads and pipe seals.
I would say indy doesnt want to touch it as he knows theres going to be issues during and after the repair.

Does K-seal actually work then?
That would be good, chuck some of that in and drop it off at the nearest dealer as a part-ex.....

Thanks Mikey, was worried everything pointed to to knackered engine.
Just thought I'd send it to a workshop to be checked properly before I washed my hands of it. Wouldn't be the first time theres a fairly simple repair when I've been certain a car was ready to be scrapped.
so, guess it's.....
1. K-seal & trade-in/auction (if my conscience can handle it)
2. Engine replacement
3. Sell as spares or repair
I wouldn't mind but it's been pretty reliable up until a couple of months ago.

I agree with Mikey , I've never known an engine that has overheated to the degree of stopping (partial seizure) and/or blowing head gaskets through overheating to run normally again, my theory is it distorts the cylinders and although the engine may run it never performs as before, poor starting, lack of power, uses oil. I have even fitted new heads and they are still the same, it is one of the first things I look for when buying or examining a used car, although you may be able to bodge it to sell any experienced buyer can tell it has overheated and will bid accordingly.
One further point, if you decide to go ahead and hope you can get away with new gaskets, which is a slight possibility, run it as little as possible or better still not at all, the point where the gasket has failed will act like an acetylene torch and will cut into the head and block rendering it useless. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Cheers guys, I'm thinking K-seal and run it till it dies then eBay it with full disclosure. Do unto others and all that.....
Do you know of anyone on the forum looking for a project? I've pm'd woody who was looking for a non-runner in the classifieds section.
The rest of the car is in pretty good condition, xenon headlights, 7 leather seats, dvd player in the rear, repaired suspension wiring and new height sensors, etc.
