Hi
Well, to cut a long story short - I've so far replaced:
Front Diff - Landrover Replacement Part
Extension Tube - Landrover Part
Front Driveshafts - Advanced Factors
Front Wheel Bearings - Timken
Transfer Box - Brand New Unit but sat on a shelf, 12 month unlimited miles warranty.
Rear Propshaft - Advanced Factors GKN
Now Ive still got a frikin bearing type noise which is more noticable around 45 to 60 miles per hour, but is very faint at lower speeds and Im fooked if I know where from?
I have also started to get a small judder between 3rd and 4th, so the torque converter is on its way out now too.
Notably, the noise does not change if you are in neutral and coast, turn corners etc - but I can feel a slight vibration through the steering wheel.
Has anyone got any ideas, will the gearbox give off this kind of bearing drone even when coasting out of gear, or could some of the replacement parts be faulty maybe?
Kind regards
Jay

Hi All
In my ongoing quest to find the route cause to my vehicle noise - I am wondering if anyone has every driven a D3 without the front propshaft and driveshafts connected for a short period of time to help locate the route cause of a drone?
My logic is that if these are disconnected, and the noise goes, it would point me in the direction of the noise as I piece by piece reassemble the components, Front Prop, offside Driveshaft, Nearside Driveshaft etc.
Would this cause any serious problems by doing such a thing, or is it safe to do for a few road tests?
Kind regards
Jay

Geoff could be on to something. If you can, try a different set of wheel/tyres. 2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

Whilst I am not discounting the tyres in the overall picture, I have to say, one has never heard tyres give a higher pitched bearing kind of drone noise like what our vehicle is displaying - more akin to a lower pitched rumble noise from my own experience, but hey ho, may be the cause..
I have the same AT's on another 4x4 and I am not getting this issue, so I would hope that LR in their ultimate wisdom have not created a 4x4 vehicle that cannot run with anything other than Pirelli road tyres
Until I can therefore find an alternate set of wheels to test, there is still the question over the removing the front drivechain parts to allow a staged replacement of components to help locate route cause. From my understanding, all the components are mechanical, hence my quest to learn if this idea is possible or not?
Kind regards
Jay

As stated, I am not ruling this out - but 'IF', testing a different set of wheels proves no different, could the alternate idea work, is it feasible to remove the front drivetrain and replace individual components to try and hone in on the route cause without affecting the gearbox etc?
Kind regards

As everything will still turn disconnected or not you are unlikely to proove it reliably.
The garages will use a multi mic amplifier system with mics on different parts underneath the car. These can be bought for £80 upwards IIRC whereas an indie will charge around £150 ish for it. Series 1 V8

Hi,
Not everything will be turning if I could do what I am contemplating. The only thing that will be turning on the front would be front wheel bearings. With no prop or driveshafts, the diff will be completely void of movement, and could if the vehicle be ran like this potentially highlight easier where the noise is coming from, as I will be getting no feedback into the transfer box and gearbox, or vice versa - noise travelling through gearbox, transfer box into front diff etc.
Due to how many connections on the disco that can convey noise / vibrations - the chassis ears have not worked very well, even to the point I am glad I never spent the money on them, because they proved non fruitful for tracing the knackered prop, diff!
More searching I fear, heyho, onwards and upwards.

A long time ago on my D3 I had a droning noise - was told by the dealer it was the tyres - yeah right I thought - but there were absolutely right
They had castellated (think that's the right spelling) on the edges - replaced tyres, noise gone

Surely, it's much easier and quicker to borrow another set of wheels and tyres My D3 Build Thread

Hi OP I have a front end rumble and am running GGAT and my local indie Woody 32 has suggested that I replace the Grabbers which is the same advice as DM gave you, before we investigate any other avenues , I brought some new ATRs and will fit them over the next couple of days a hope that this may cure some of the rumble
good luck with yours

Not arguining that point DM as stated a couple of times now. However, until I locate a set - I was simply asking for some further clarification / understanding , but everyone seems to be circumventing the what if that does not cure it point because that must definitely be the cause, whereby my quest was trying to understand if my fall back plan is able to be done, if not what prevents it from being an option.
Seems my quest is not something anyone has tried, which is fine - at least now I know that there is no experience of such a test, so I will research further.
Was a sincere and genuine question I thought - but never mind!
