If it's of any help, a few members have experienced failed front cv joints. It used to be a common problem on earlier cars, when off road extended height, full steering lock, and a heavy right boot combined to pop the joint and the balls fell out.
This effectively disconnected the front wheel from the drivetrain. You would think the car would just carry on in rear wheel drive, but no. The electronics would go into complete meltdown, and the traction control would prevent any meaningful driving.
I suspect you would get the same result if you did something like removing the front prop shaft, or drive shafts.
You might get away with these methods of diagnosis in a Defender, but not a Disco 3/4

Thank you Gareth,
That helps a lot. Mechanically I was kind of hoping it could work - but the electronics are obviously the achilles heal that puts a spanner in the works.
Thanks again, very much appreciated.
