Torque converter fitting quote - Yay or Nay?

Hi all,

Despite having a flush done, my TC has finally started to give me the shudders. Can't say i'm entirely surprised, as the service history would suggest it ran the same oil from the factory for at least 110k miles.

So anyway, I got a quote for Suffolk Automatic Transmissions (Given trusted reccomendations. Anyone here used them?).

For approx. £1300 (inc VAT) they will:
- Change the TC (they have specified a new TC, but looking to confirm this is brank spanking new rather than 'new' refurb)
- Change filter pan and filter for metal replacement type (again, seeking confirmation they didn't price up a plastic replacement)
- All replacement oils
- Collection and delivery from my home

The price seems very low if they do mean a metal pan and brand new TC, but having heard glowing reports i'm encouraged.

What do you guys think?
I did try contacting Bristol Transmissions via email but haven't had a response for a few weeks.

Ive no judder but a hell of alot of slip and slack especially in 3rd and 4th.

I'm just waiting until it dies then going for a whole recon box, i think if its been on the same oil (as mine was unit I bought it and did full change at 126k) then not only the TC will be nackered but also the plates.

Steve Norman put a brand new T/C in for me cost around £1250 ,I was talking to Bristol Transmissions they would put a recon unit in for the same price ,Bristol Transmissions were very help full and many poster on have used them on here and been very happy Thumbs Up

For comparison, I charge £1100 inc VAT for a torque converter only, or £1250 to include a new sump, sealing sleeve and extra oil Thumbs Up

Still waiting for Suffolk Auto Transmissions to confirm details, but Bristol Transmissions have quoted the below.

The cost of a TC replacement with new steel sump conversation (and a new prop which is overdue) including pickup and delivery to Ipswich is £1728 inc VAT.

I asked about any other potential areas to investigate while the box is out, and they advised about spline wear. It's not very likely, but it's a worst case scenario to have excessive wear, which would require a gearbox overhaul, and new transfer box input shaft.

So, the cost of replacing the TC, overhauling gearbox, replacing transfer box input shaft, new steel sump and oils, new rear prop and collection / delivery to Ipswich would be £3840 inc VAT. Shocked
Has anyone come across this kind of wear before?

Although there is the cost of transport to Bristol Transmissions, they were very knowledgeable over the phone, and give me a lot of confidence! Thumbs Up

Hi again,

As it's always helpful to see the outcome of these things. So I can now report the following:

- Disco_Mikey: Yes you're right, they mis-quoted me and in fact the rear prop cost £240 excl VAT.

Work carried out...
- Remanufacture of automatic gearbox
- Fitting of new torque converter
- Transfer box opened for inspection, input shaft replaced.
- New rear prop fitted (Britpart)
- Steel gearbox pan and filter upgrade fitted
- Ravenol ATF 6HP fluid used
- Collected and delivered from Ipswich, Suffolk to Bristol Transmissions (Approx 208 mile 4 hr journey).
- This included a test drive prior to work commencing to confirm the diagnosis.

During the week Bristol Transmission had the Disco, they kept me up to speed with emails and phone calls, and were kind enough to supply pictures upon request to show me what they found.

All in for this work was £3960.

If this was any other vehicle, I would have thrown in the towel and got rid of it. However, this is the first vehicle I can genuine put my hand on heart and say I have no plans to sell it. I use it for absolutely everything. Most recently i've been putting it through it's paces deploying search and rescue teams in the search for RAF Serviceman Corrie McKeague. I can't think of a better vehicle for the job.

It's worth every penny.

The reason the gearbox was reconditioned was mostly done to spline wear. You can see in the photos they are starting to look a bit flat. Additionally you can see the dry rusty powder where the factory grease between the gearbox output and transfer box input has long gone, causing the splines to run dry. This may be something worth considering as a 5 or 6 yearly service item to drop the transfer box and shove some fresh grease in.

My hope is, now it's all brand new that with a regular change of oil it will outlast the rest of the Disco!

Credit to Bristol Transmissions for the photo's. Despite a few issues with being mis-quoted (prop and transport), I would still highly recommend them.
