start/stop and auxiliary battery |
|
Things used to be simple, they say ..
On the D3, I had a split charge and an auxiliary battery mounted in the second housing box under the bonnet. In a LHD that's on the .. well, left
One of the first things I did when I got home with the new D4 was looking into that box ..
What a suprise ...
There's barely room to fit anything extra
I can determine the smaller battery fo the start/stop system and some other related boxes and bits, but no way I can move all these out of the way as I've seen previously here on the forum. It definately didn't look that full to begin with.
Anyway, what I start wondering is how these split charge systems work ..
From what I understood (I'm speaking for the National Luna, which I had on the D3), there's a timer and a voltage sensor .. once a voltage drop is sensed, the charging stops. At least, that's what I understood.
As such, one can imagine that this would happen very often with the start/stop system ...
I actually posed National Luna a question about this, but I haven't received word yet.
However, someone on here may confirm this behaviour and that would then prompt for the question: what's the solution for this?
I read something about battery-to-battery charging from Sterling that would do the job when it has to deal with smart alternators (seems to be related to the start/stop system and/or eco-driving). Is this the right way to go?
Could someone please enlighten (haha) me on this ?
It looks like I could have left the aux bat installation on the D3 instead of dismantling it D4

Nobody installed an auxiliary batt in his/her D4 so far ?
Ah well, let's hope some may help me out on my next step .. 8)
I was looking at the http://sterling-power.com/collections/batt...=978775683
Sterling Power BB1230.
I've added p6 and 7 of the manual http://www.disco3.co.uk/gallery/albums/use...0_p6-7.pdf
Looks this is designed to cope with smart alternators (and regenerating power through braking)
Is there anybody around here with some experience with this product?
Thanks in advance,
Cheers D4

I followed the lead set by Wiggs on my 15MY with stop/start.
Aux battery now behind N/S boot panel, aux power still over on O/S (jack cubby panel).
About to strip it to measure up to make a battery tray to secure it long term.
Kit I'm using is Traxide (came out of my 12MY) with Optima Yellow Top Paul.

Thanks Jester,
you leave me with more questions though
N/S boot panel ?
O/S?
Tried to find Wiggs' thread as you pointed out, but he has a wee bit too much posts
Couldn't find his aux batt setup in his gallery either .. only his back panel connections http://www.disco3.co.uk/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=2492
Will look into the traxide. I'm known with the YT
Could you detail a little bit please?
Thanks D4

As you look into the load area:
N/S - on the left, battery behind the removable cubby panel, had to remove the entire side panel to fit, cable ruins from engine bay under the plastic trim as you open the door.
o/S - on the right, my aux power fittings are on the cubby panel you remove to get to the jack stowage., wanted them here so I had power to both sides.
Cable from aux battery to jack stowage running under the rear plastic trim at the base of the tailgate.
Not yet measured up for battery tray yet but happy to get another made up & can pack & ship to you if required. Paul.

@Nessie - just to help for the future:
N/S = near side with reference to the kerb (in the UK passenger side)
O/S = off side with reference to the kerb (in the UK driver side) .

@jester
hadn't thought of putting it after the side panel .. sounds like a nice idea. With the 5-seater, I thought of putting it in the footwell of the 3rd row as there's no room left in front.
@canburne
thanks .. sounds like a Navy guy trying to explain port and starboard to me Thanks for adding the UK driver/passenger clarification
It doesn't help I'm from continental Europe either

I might need a mirror installed in my D4 .. looks like this will be my next project D4

BTW if I may ask, why connected to the stop/start battery?
Is there any particular reason for this?
Thanks D4

Didn't see the point of running another Lead across to the main battery .. the one I would have ran would have been the same size anyway
Just connected it to the dedicated battery post on the stop start relay ( not the actual stop start battery )
That's the dedicated battery post for the main battery ( on the stop start relay ) G4 Gone ...but not forgotten

Good point. Now all I need to know is how to get the battery charge lead through into the passenger compartment ? ? A vaccine does not stop you catching a virus, or passing it on, or getting ill from it, really ill. It does reduce the likelyhood of you dying when really, really ill.
