Warranty Direct say it's accidental damage and won't pay out
A1 insurance say it's mechanical failure and won't pay out
£5100 bill
Any thoughts?

The first thought that comes to mind is Rock or a hard place!
I think WD are probably correct that it is accidental damage, in as much as it looks like someone in history has left a foreign object in the works. It's your bad luck it took so long to actually move to where it causes damage.
Your insurance company are probably not correct by saying its mechanical failure. It is, but it was caused by accident! Same scenario as a mis fuel I suppose.
You have a fight on your hands I'm afraid.

Went to pick up car, wouldn't start. They don't know why but admit something they've done.

Please tell me you haven't paid yet?
I was in a different position. When I had a crankshaft problem with the D4, just out of warranty, luckily LR paid, but never felt right. I got shot of it, couldn't risk it going wrong again. Time and expense, I'd have felt obliged to WD it.
Replacement new LR cost trade in plus £9k. For that I saved £2k running costs per year, £800 Warranty Direct, so in 3 years it was a no cost option. Makes you think.

No I haven't paid.
As an aside WD say it wasn't an "unexpected and sudden" issue. Tit for tat and semantics at the moment.
A Plan say I can't claim but brazenly sent my renewal "advising me to renew" with them and have logged my inquiry as a claim despite their passive aggressive positioning that if I proceeded and had an engineer sent out it would be logged so I took the decision not to.

You have my sympathies for what it's worth.
I can understand you, WD and the Insurance companies stance. Bit of a hot potato. I am just not sure there's going to be a resolution to it other than you paying as you've probably realised.
annoying and hit by a mega bill at this time of year,

Right. Didn't start due to inlet manifold leak. Their fault so they ordered another one.
Fitter inlet manifold and they realised they've burnt out the starter motor so have ordered another one.
I'd laugh if it wasn't so utterly frustrating.
Unbelievable

To save me reading the whole thread again, is this at a main franchised LR dealer?
Regarding your insurance logging the incident, I had the same when my washing machine flooded my cellar. I rang to enquiry if I could claim for the damage. I decided not to after they advised me of the excesses. However, I found it on my record as an risk increasing incident when I subsequently tried to renew with another insurer. Very underhand in my opinion, but there is nothing I can do about it.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing comrade. I'd like to think as well as their general ineptitude I've been rather unfortunate

Your right, there's a few decisions we would have altered in retrospect.
