McCarthy & Stone retirement flats
Hi all,
My mother is 84, lives in a big old house on her own and suffers from dementia and mobility issues.
We (her 5 children) have discussed the possibility of her moving into some kind of retirement flat and a development has recently started in our home Town
The company is called McCarthy & Stone, they seem a big national company and my older brother and Sister seem keen.
I Googled them and found out done negative reviews as well as some investigations on them (example 'Dispatches' on ch4)
Does anybody out there know of them or have come across them and perhaps could share some insights with me?
Thanks in advane

My late grandfather lived in their site on St Helens Road when it was first built and I can't recall having any issues.
My aunt and uncle have purchased one in Grantham having returned from 30 years in the Cayman Islands. They love it and even the slightly different weather hasn't put them off!I started off with nothing and Ive still got most of it left.

As you say Iggy, they're everywhere, plenty up here as well,
Don't seem cheap for what you get though.
Check if you're buying the flat or renting. And what happens regarding resale in the future.
As they're new built they should be nice and clean and well insulated so lower bills.
Good luck

They are very popular in this part of the world as are Churchill and Anchor. If your Mum is suffering with dementia is she going to be well enough to stay in an assisted home? Some like Anchor have a range of homes from warden assisted through to residential care. One of my clients has recently moved to one of their homes north of Southampton, I haven't been yet but I understand it is lovely and creates a real community. One thing you do have to watch are the service charges, they can be very high.DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone

My company does the kitchen & bathroom refurb's for them and to date have not heard any negative feed back. I must agree with the last comment of the sense of community within retirement homes. I would happily stick the mother-in-law in one....... Note to myself: Google Mcarthy & Stone / Antarctic.2010 RR 5.0 Autobiography

Cheers all, Comanche it is the one in Morriston
Plenty to think about, although just received an email from oldest brother that Mam has rang to say she doesn't want to move there!
The only issue is that it's very hard for her now at home, but what can we do? We can't force her to move, but it's so hard for her!
Horrible time, and tough, tough decisions
I think a sleep is needed Iggy/Ieuan

In a recent Retirement Development I was involved with, I researched local competition and McCarthy & Stone had a scheme which was around 4 years old in close proximity. Looking at publicly available Land Registry data for the last 12 resales in that development resulted in an AVERAGE 50% loss on initial purchase pric

Let her stay in her own house and get the council carers to pop in 4 times a day.
My 90 yr old MIL gets that, even though she's registered blind, selective hearing and has mobility problems. She said I'd rather be in my grave than one of them homes/sheltered home which is basically what you're describing.

You can get carers to come in, but you have to pay for these if you've got any substantial savings. I cant remember what the threshold is. We have this situation with my MiL.

don't rule out an Extra Care scheme operated by housing associations.
they are a step up from sheltered housing as they have the care facility on site 24 hours. you pay rent and service charge but depending on circumstances your Local Authority may pick the bill up for the care element as it saves them footing the bill for nursing home care.XC90 T8 R Design Pro

All
We've had an emotional few days amongst the siblings and a few words said int he heat of the moment as well!
We are meeting up on Sunday to check on where we are, but for the moment Mam is adamant that she is not moving into a flat, so that part of the decision is on hold for now.
The links for the care are really useful and I'll go through all of this with everybody on Sunday
Thanks all Iggy/Ieuan

We've had similar experience with my 89 year old Mother in Law. She is rock solid in her own home (51 years).
Instead of getting a Carer company to look after her, we asked around her home town for self-employed singletons and found two brilliant Lady Carers to look after her. Unlike the company carers, they are not on a time limit, they're not untrained teenagers and are not subject to being changed every couple of days.
The ladies we employ used to work for such companies but left because of stringent time slots. These two ladies are now my MiL's friends and carers.
It's a Win/Win. Never take life too seriously. Nobody gets out alive anyway.
