Asked dealer to investigate while car in for a service. Dealer said ticking noise normal when engine cold and should stop when warmed up. On my car it's the total opposite - ticking sound only when engine warm. Dealer consulted JLR and just called to say there is a problem with the "lifters" adjustment resulting in loss of pressure when warm. Not sure what it means, but bottom line they have to keep the car for 4 days, strip the top part of the engine and fix. At least all being done under warranty.
Looking forward to picking it up and making sure the ticking noise is no more.

Problem solved. Collected car back after days at the dealers today. They replaced four "lifters" under warranty and ticking noise gone! Engine now sounds like a proper 3.0 V6 Diesel should and not like a sewing machine.

Interesting that this thread popped back up today. My 2013 is starting to sound very similar to this.
AndrewS first brought my attention to the noise when we were touring Ireland earlier this year, he said he thought my car was noisy compared to his new D5. I just thought it was down to the D5 having better sound proofing or something.
However, this past few weeks it has developed a very distinct clicking noise at idle when it's warm. Sounds just like a few loose tappets.
I was parked next to my mates D3 today, and it was much quieter at idle.
