I have a "62" reg D4, and the other day I noticed the number plate light (nearest to the kerb) was hanging out, supported only by the wiring.
I assume a securing clip had broken (but why?), but couldn't definitely see where the tag or clip used to be originally.
Has anyone experienced this before? I can't understand how the light got damaged initially.
What is the "official" way of removing this light?
All responses gratefully received

I think the retaining tag would have been moulded on the end, you can see where it is broken off, the small rough rectangle, above the square moulding lines 3/4 of the way up in your picture

Yeah the plastic lug has snapped off your light unit.
There are two fixed "lumps" at one end and a flexible lug at the other. The flexible lug allows just enough movement for the light unit to be removed because of the give it allows.
Your's however, is goosed and will have to be packed, or glued or both to hold it in.
I think a replacement is only about £20.Mods:

Mine did that when I replaced the bulbs to LED.... a worthwhile mod whilst you have it out
The one on my D3 fell out. I stuck it back in with double sided tape. Never fell out again

They've regularly fallen out of both my D3 and D4... I think they fail when you slam the tailgate a lot!
As above - the little plastic clip breaks. Good news is the are very cheap to replace and come with a new bulb!

Which LED bulbs did you replace them with?
Are they canbus / trigger any error lights on the dash?
Are they not too bright?
Do they affect your LR warranty??
Sorry for the list of questions but it's something I'd be interested in doing too.

I bought these as the light is slightly bluer but not too much, they are great. No issues at all on the car. I also changed the one in the boot. I think the car has over 10 of these in all the interior lights if you feel flush.
Thank you to everyone who replied.
Being slightly paranoid, I had wondered if the broken light was the result of an attempted break-in!
I can now clearly see where a lug has broken off. Another expensive trip to the dealership.
Once again, thank you for the information.

I also know AF sell something similar but Philips is a good brand.
They are great in the number plate lights as the old filament style get hot and then you slam the boot and then they blow.
I like them but only did the number plate and boot with them.
I bought the 4000K, I think the 6000k and the 8000k will be too blue.
I can't see why it would affect the warranty its on a bulb.
What do these ones look like ? If you ask me the AF ones are a bit bright. It lights up the road !!Velar MY18 D180 S Narvik
