For the price of a coffee & a Mars bar what have I got to lose? I don't see the point in paying £70 - £80 for a pair of bulbs when I can get pretty much the same for £4 + change. The leading brands may be better but I don't think they are 20x better.
Anyone got any recommendations for cheap bulbs that they have bought?

I may be removing a pair of Osram Cool Blue Intense D2S bulbs from my D3 this week if you want those, Del? They've only been in the car a couple of months.

Thanks for the offer but was going to try these anyway, just to see what they are like. Bit of idle curiosity makes devil's work. Plus the ones in the car at the mo are fine. Just don't tell SWMBO that.

Beanie recommended some cheapo Chinese bulbs to me a couple of years ago, £16 per pair delivered and they were ok, in fact they're still fitted now and have been excellent.
Same goes for wipers too. Why pay £25 per blade at dealers when for little more than a fiver, you can get a pair, new perfectly good blades from eBay. Replace them twice per year if you like for that price but you wont need to, they're excellent.Mods:

I wouldn't risk anything that could damage my head light units (execs heat of damaging the connections.
Whatever the saving is on new globes - cant be compared to the cost of a new head light unit.
also you need to see & be seen & be legal MOT wise

I might have meant "U have nothing to loose" as in let loose but I fear you may be correct. And I read that post a couple of times before posting.
Good experience is good. One thing I feel with my existing bulbs is they are quite dim until about an hour into an early morning drive, then they seem a good bit better. I don't know if that's the bulbs, my eyes or my imagination. Also the light pool of cars going past always seems brighter, longer & better defined, I get xenon envy!
Re damaging the units, or anything else, that would mean I don't put anything on the car that doesn't have a LR badge. It's a 10 year old car, we are well past that. Plus I have two sets of Halogen units in the loft that can be brought into service if anything happens to the xenons.
I have an issue with one other car that means two new headlamp units (cant say too much "yet" as the issue is only part resolved)...I am talking 1000 pounds per unit
...but you I'm sure wouldn't want to have to buy one let alone two to keep a 10 year old motor going.
the light from older Xenons "greys" out & makes doing on "dipped" positively dangerous...although Xenons dont fail by "going out" (like a normal globe) they do deteriorate unlike a normal filament incandescent globe.
Also - I feel that the move to LED's is a wrong one if the LED unit isn't fixable...I see lots of cars & trucks with partially lit LED units...a whole new unit is far far more expensive that a few new globes.
I have had three out of five LED units swapped on warranty on one of my other vehicles - two as MOT requirables.
There is going to be a market to "fix" LED units to save the loot on having to buy new unitsBREXIT - done properly.

Luckily the tech of the D3 lights is prob almost 15 years old so my LED side bulbs and uprated (& fully legal ) are fully removable. The advantage of old kit.
Right, oh wise ones, out there: 5000k or 6000k? My existing ones are 5000k, wonder how big a change it is to 6000k.
I've got to buy some freezer door hinges from Amazon so this is my chance to get some bulbs sneaked in.

6000k will be very slightly blue compared to 5000k, I changed mine to £14ish a pair Chinese 6000k about 3 years ago, they are still good and no problems with them, put 100w 6000k Chinese in spots to match again no problems.
Only thing with cheapo halogens you have to watch is they don't always focus as well as good quality, the bulb on some(glass part) can be seen to be bent or not install perfect.It can when others can't,

Cheers, thought that was the case re colour. Pair of the 6000k bulbs (change is as good as a rest) ordered, on their way from Hong Kong so prob won't have them for Pyrenees jolly heading off end Sept. Will see how they are.
Re Halogens, have Phillips Xtreme +100%s in the high beam slots and would use same in high and low slots if I changed back to halogens.

Will do. Wish they could include some dim sum in there as well.
Too late now, but lower colour temperature is better for your eyes and higher efficacy for HID bulbs (4300K is best) - meaning either brighter or longer lasting or both and generally better colour rendering.
