The signs everywhere of ''Keep off the Grass Max Fine £10.'' were also not to be taken as some sort of gentle Public Health notice.
Innocent days.

Ah... the clash between American understanding and English as it should be...
Completely off topic (sorry), but reminds me of the moment (allegedly) when Nigel Mansell had gone to the US to compete in Indycar...
Apparently, his wife saying that she was "... looking for a large joint - something for the entire family over the weekend..." brought the place to a shocked standstill!

''Off topic'' too.
The exchange scheme with the Ladies School adjacent to Harvard, about which I wrote earlier, saw a certain in-balance between their 18 and 19 y olds coming to our Urban (post) Industrial Multi-cultural, multi-ethnic City - a shock which even their chaperones never really came to terms with.
''Our'' students were a mix gender group of mainly mature streetwize, dynamic people. One (Ian) was a hulking chap, who played Rugby League, and coached many a junior team.
On this group's Welcome evening, the speeches by the President and Vice President (Of the School) were over, reference having made to the Time difference, and the hope that 'our' students had re-set their alarm clocks.
Up stood Brave Ian, and in his broad Yorkshire assured the dignitaries that one of his duties was to ''Knock one and all up each morning.''
Some staff choked, and others fainted.
