No command/sports mode

Went to use command mode and yesterday but when I pushed the lever sideways, nothing happened and I just got an intermittent word flashing up on the display. Pushing back and forth does nothing. Also started to have problem getting the key out of ignition so assume this is possibly related. Gearbox otherwise is fine. Any clues as to the problem?

There was a recent post on here saying the lack of command shift was due to a wiring fault. Maybe by the passenger seat ?

Bloke was about to have a new gearbox.
Apparently it worked if the headlights were on (from the start)

Have a search

On the Freelander auto shift there is a proximity sensor built into the selector lever assembly in the car that sometimes goes belly up, The result being that the ecu doesn't know that the lever has been pulled across. If the Disco has a similar arrangement it might be that.

The fix for my son's Freelander was a "new" selector (eBay - forty quid), but it's a Disco so it won't be that simple!

Had the same problem with sport/command. LR said I needed a new box.
Did a bit of reading on here and heard about the wiring fault. Three wire splice running up under the passenger door.
Try turning on the lights BEFORE selecting Drive. Everything works fine. lights can be turned off again when you start moving. I can live with that rather than ripping the car apart to find the splice.
Having the same problem with the key at times. For this put the ignition to position 2 and move the level up and down through the gears. Turn off, remove key. Don't know if the two are related...

If you put it in Park with your foot on the brake sometimes the key doesn't release.

Cheers Battooper will give that a shot with the shift, have discovered that trick with the key. Thumbs Up

Have also just had this... Unable to select command or sport. No messages on dash and no apparent problems with gearbox. Currently in Devon avoiding steep descents that I would normally use command shift with. Off to my indie when home next week...

Been using this thread http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/post1047558.html#1047558 to solve the gearbox problem and not getting anywhere as the splice as illustrated doesn't seem to exist on mine, difference between V8s and diesels?

Gear indicator lights only work with lights on and if you select sports using the lights on trick sports flashing on and off and still no command mode.

I can get "Sports" to flash up intermittently, whenever I turn the sidelights on, even with the lights disconnected. Checked under the centre console, no obvious issues there, not sure where to go now.

Just an update, having exhausted all else I picked up a s/h shifter and having removed the old one and fitted the new one I found the cause of the problem.

I couldn't get the wiring connector in and knowing the shifter was from a newer model, thought I would check it was the same the connector was the same and looking at the old shift, I noticed a pin missing and yes said pin is firmly jammed in the female side of the connector, took quite a bit io open it up enough to get it to fit, but the old girl now has her mojo back, even if she now has special programs not available.
