Last week a cyclist tried to beat my wife across a junction. hit the wing and landed on my windscreen and bonnet Censored Censored . My wife didn't see him when he tried to dash across the giveaway sign. Anyway by all accounts he tumbled over the wing smashed the windscreen and the roof lining came down, The cyclist was taken away for a look at at but was later discharged with minor cut and bruises

After the usual breathalyse the driver not the cyclists routine, the car was taken to impound by the police..

So Admiral call to say the car is at local loss assessor and is a write off due the value of the car outweighing the repair costs, estimated at £6k Shocked Shocked Shocked

I'v had the car 4yrs and admittedly had up and downs with it, but have spent££££'s getting it right Whistle Whistle

Now i'm lucky if i am looking at market value for the 56 plate, new NOT and Road tax 2 months ago,

So options are apart from taking the cash and running, is i may buy it back at salvage price. and this will offset against the cost of the claim so i hope what i have left can repair it.

Its classed as Cat D so will need a new MOT. Does anyone have any experience of similar Question s= circumstances. The car has no structural damage more cosmetic. Bonnet a bit of the dash and wing.

28 yrs driving and it my first experience of this.

Pursue the cyclist for your losses. Your insurer should attempt to recover the loss for you but most call centre chimps can barely spell their name so you may need to go direct against the cyclist.

You say it needs part of the dash. What is wrong with it has the air bag activated. The work involved in taking out the dash swapping everything over and replacing is fairly big job and may be why the quote is so expensive. If the air bag has activated you may need a new air bag ecu as well as it stores the activation and gives fault codes.

Why does every page of the manual have fingerprints?

I cycle a lot. It amazes me how many cyclists don't even think about liability insurance - always head in the sand, won't ever happen to me mentality. You can get decent cyclist liability insurance for £25 per year. Fortunately I get mine included with my Triathlon England membership/subscription.

No wonder insurance companies get laughed at if they think that's £6k worth of damage. Windscreen should only be the glass excess, the rest I could live with or just get filled. Some of us have picked up more damage than that offroading, apart from the windscreen. They're having a laugh. Rolling Eyes

New windscreen and possibly bonnet. May struggle to repair it properly. Doors can be repaired

Just to wind up the thread a bit

6 weeks on no police report finalized, so not in a position to pursue the cyclist for losses at the moment.

Anyway Insurer offered as expected market value for the car Neutral . haggled like Censored to get a decent amount for what i deemed reasonable considering mileage, condition Thumbs Up , offer was there to buy for salvage and offset the cost against the claim, between time and hassle just took the money an went on hunt for another motor. The laugh is that the payout was exceeding the cost of car repair and they still didn't budge on repaiting it Confused

Lesson learnt
1. Don't accept the first offer of cash from the insurer. Thumbs Up
2. Get a policy with hire car option, i would have got one if the cyclist had insurance Whistle
3. Ask for the salvage buy back cost

As Ali1971 suggested, find out if the cyclist had home insurance as it usually contains third party liability. Give the details to your insurance company to recover their costs so you can have your NCD reinstated.
I had a friend some years ago who ran a pedestrian over when riding his motorcycle (she walked out in front of him). He successfully claimed personal injury and vehicle repairs from her home insurance. If you had out of pocket expenses, car hire for example, you may get that back as well.
