Detatchable towbar undetatchable......
Ok, So I had a detachable on my Mondeo ST. Im not a fan of detatchables, clue's in the name. But the mondeo seamed to be fine. Ive heard lots of horror stories and recalls about the Disco3/4 towbar and have decided I want a solid fixed bar for towing my caravan and plant trailer. Problem is, I cant get the old one off. The locking mechanism appears to be missing. How can I get this off? I want to take it into LR to get the recall done but ive been informed they wont touch it because of this. Any help much appreciated.
You can see that some of it is still there, and there is a spring inside......

Have you still got the spindle for the lock?

Nope. Thats all I got. Im wondering if someone has tried to pinch it at some point in its life. Previous owner didnt seam to care but I do. There is movement in the socket, and I quite like my caravan securely attached
Juts to be clear, without that spindle and lock, no matter how hard it seems to remove it, it is NOT securely attached, please don't tow with it!

Sorted. Came out easier than I thought. Glad it didnt drop out while I was towing!
Now to get it to LR ...... See if I can get a fully fixed one fitted. Anyone got any fuel for me to give to LR?

I'd be interested in knowing how you get on. My detachable tow bar has a bit of movement in it. Its had the recall done but I'm still not happy with it.Discovery 3, 2006, HSE, 2.7 TDV6, Java Black, EGR Blanked, New belts + tensioners. Autobox flushed +new filter.

When I bought my MY2010 D4 earlier this year from the dealer who sold it new to the only previous owner and serviced it, it had never had tow electrics fitted. They told me they had checked the tow bar as part of the checks they do before putting it on the forecourt for sale and it was OK. I paid for them to fit the tow electrics and they gave me a brand new detachable tow bar as part of the deal. When I put the new tow bar into the car, which had never had one fitted before, I could move it back and forth far too much for my liking so went out and bought a Thule fixed adjustable tow bar and fitted that instead.D4 - Stornoway Grey

Had mine replaced with a fixed one (and new crossmember welded in) with the recall.
Gotta say, having now towed with both, the fixed one is a considerably better option.Arthur.
