Anyone tried this already??

OK, so I gather that D4 tailgate issues are not as prevalent as they are on D3s but as I have just been locked out of mine and had to have it repaired under warranty clearly it still happens so it got me to thinking...

Has anyone ever thought about taking the tailgate release system from a D2 and adapting it to go into the lower tailgate of a D3/4 so they have an internal release for emergency use?

I am talking about this bit here:

I know that in the D2 application the metal pressing is screwed to brackets inside the door but am sure there is a way to fabricate something to replicate that or if not perhaps to make a suitable plastic (3D printing?) or aluminium trim piece to fit to the trim panel and hold the latch.

I'm not going to pull my car apart to look at this for a while yet as it still has the balance of the warranty left but as soon as it's out of that it'll be on my list of things to look into.

Any thoughts??

Shouldn't a button connected to the outside release button do the job or are you looking for a mechanical solution only?

BTW: quite impressed by your DRL Halos

I have seen a thread on here about putting a release handle in the inside, I can't find it right now.

I used some thin wire like bicycle brake cable style as a mech back up and just tucked one end under the trim with a little bit partially visible so all you need is a pair of pliers or a screwdriver to use to pull the cable.
Obviously if your boot is loaded to the roof its still going to be an Censored .

This was somehow hidden but it looks like an excellent solution by another forum member:
