Steering wheel electrics

I have an intermittent airbag warning light and occasionally the steering wheel switches for the radio operate in an unusual manner (for example the volume skips the CD track).

Looking at the posts on here suggests its either a steering wheel wiring loom or clock spring issue. Is that the case?

Also, I have noticed that the (faux?) leather cover on the centre steering wheel airbag is curling up at the top and bottom. Although not a major issue, it does look a bit untidy. If the wheel was coming off anyway to fix the electronic problem/s I had thought about changing the airbag unit to make it look tidier, but I have been unable to find one online.

Does anyone know if you can buy just the airbag/centre piece and if so, how much are they? If too expensive will live with the 'curly' trim.

Thanks for any advice.

Just found a couple of prices online (OUCH!).

As I'm not sure I want to buy a second-hand airbag, looks like I'll be putting up with this for a while...

Live with the curl, they all do it/have done it. Rolling Eyes

Might be a good idea to check the little wiring looms below the airbag. The connectors are somewhat fragile and the wires can easily break in time giving odd and spurious responses.
They're a very common fault.
Always check that first before changing the rather expensive clockspring. Wink

Yes, check the wires.

I had a problem with the steering wheel switches only working intermittently and was ready to buy and fit a new rotary coupler (clock spring) so instead I made a air bag release tool from a coat hanger

I then disconnected the air bag, which allowed easy access to the various wire connectors underneath. I then inspected, disconnected, cleaned and then reconnected the connectors and reassembled the air bag and steering wheel.

All switches worked without problem and the entire job took around 25 minutes, including making the coat hanger tool
