AGM battery on a D3?
Is there any reason or disadvantage that I shouldn't fit an AGM battery on a D3 apart from cost?It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

The alternator voltage is a little high for most AGMs, but if you get one with a voltage spec that suits the D3 then it will serve you well.

None that I know of, best upgrade I made, no more "special programs off" warnings during the winter months anymore, much better suited to my needs because I do mainly short journeys and the AGM charges faster.
If you go to your LR dealer and buy a new battery for your D3 they will sell you an AGM.
I bought the Exide start stop AGM from euro car parts.

From memory the Exide AGM has a 14.6v charging limit, with a 15.0v peak emergency (for up to 1 hour) limit. The D3 will push out 15.3v or more in colder weather.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

Ive noticed that with my D3 now showing 14.8 most of the time whereas a few weeks ago it was 15.1 all the time.

I think the conclusion was AGM, as Robbie said, properly specced. I went with wet-cell.
I did this 3 years ago now...
no issues...checking the alternator output who I get the opportunity 14.5 0r 14.6
The battery seems to handle the lifestyle its now serving.
I also fitted a same size battery to the Old Merc I have adoptedBREXIT - done properly.

The D3 voltage is not fixed, it is dependent on temperature - so it will go above 15v when it is cold...Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

Am I heading for trouble then?

Good question, what are the consequences likely to be?- goosed alternator, goosed battery or worse! I've checked my alternator output this (slight frost)morning, it peaked at 15.5 volts with a wet cell battery fitted. It can when others can't,

Mine peaks at 15.5v to 15.4v on cold mornings too.

As Robbie says that is the problem with fitting an AGM battery on a D3, after doing my home work most AGM battery's have a maximum charge rate of 14.6 volts, the more you go over this rate the more likely the battery will overheat and warp the plates, particularly on a long journey, current is not a concern as they can be recharged in as little as 3 hours.
It would be interesting to know if a D4 alternator could be fitted to a D3 to overcome the problem! So unless you are like me and had an AGM battery gifted to you stick with a conventional wet cell.It can when others can't,

But on a long journey the alternator output should drop down to low 14s or even 13.something volts?

It could do depending on what accessories you have switched on and the state of charge of the battery and time of year. The most useful item could be a cockpit voltmeter. It can when others can't,
