Talk me through my aircon!

So had my aircon regassed last week but something still not right... My old D3 used to be very efficient in the aircon dept but this one (06 plate) seems rather lacklustre. First time I've used the air con in earnest since I got it...

I've put a thermometer in the dash vent and with min temp selected and a mid range on the blower I'm getting 6 degrees (with outside temp of 17ish). Turn on "Econ" and temp jumps up to 17ish - i.e. it's just blowing in air from outside without any chilling as expected.

Problem is when I select auto and say, 18 degrees - fan drops right back to minimum and hardly any cold air is blown out. Yesterday external temp was about 19 degrees, nice and sunny, I was in shorts and a t-shirt with internal auto 18 degrees selected and it was too hot inside. What's it gonna be like when we get a proper summer!!

Seems like the only way I can get any real cooling is to select manual blower and min temp - which doesn't seem right for "climate control"!

I've read all the info on the foam sock, but don't think that would effect things as that stops the car thinking temp is higher than it is and providing excessive cooling. My problem is the opposite - insufficient cooling!

Any thoughts??

Hi,

There is a discussion in another thread about exactly what the "econ" butto does, but obviously you do not want this on if you are trying to get it cold.

I have found the "auto" setting only works for me for heat, to get the coolest air coming out of the vents , I have it set to face level vents and the fan on the 3rd or 4th setting, any higher and the air is not having enough time to cool.

As it has been topped up recently, the other thing you could try and replace the pollen filter. I had a situation where I found that the performance of the heater had dropped as well as the ability to cool and replacing the pollen filter definately improved things.

6 degrees does not sound too bad, I think I have got mine down to 5 or even 4.5, but the issue there is the volume of air at thattemperature.

Do you have rear Aircon ?

No rear aircon so no leaky rear pipes!

AUTO just doesn't seem to work very effectively - don't recall having this issue with the last D3 I had Question Question

Will check out the pollen filter though - cheers Thumbs Up

The Econ button reduces the power consumption of the system .....I leave the aircon in auto at all times Thumbs Up

Do you have anything covering the sun sensor ?

Symptoms same as mine as aircon was failing through a leak in the system. In normal operation, at 18 in Auto it blows a freezing gale until it lowers the temperature.

However

Where is it? Wondered why mine was slow to respond when driving into a shadow.

It's on the corner of what is or looks like (depending on your sound system ) a speaker in the centre of the dash at the base of the windscreen Smile

Appreciate "econ" effectively turns off the aircon and is simply an old fashioned heater/blower without the chiller.

My old one used to be like that - set 18 degrees and auto and you'd be freezing in no time on the hottest summers day!!

Don't think I've got a leak as I can get 6 degree air out of the system by selecting manual and coldest setting - suspecting it more thermostat related?? Question Question Will check out the sun sensor - nothing covering it unless it's full of dust and fluff in there...
