What voltage.

What voltage should I get at battery with engine running?

I'm getting 13.8 volts, and once the system is loaded (lights on, heated screens, heated seats) it drops to 12.9 volts.

Is this correct?

Thanks Andy.

Nope, sounds like your alternator is goosed.

Mine only ever crept up to 14+ volts in the dead of winter when temps around freezing and nowadays
bounces between 13.7 and 13.8 regardless of what's running.

Put a new alternator from AF on last year and a new battery a few weeks ago and no change.

I have seen once 14.9V, usually goes up in the morning to 14.7V, and goes down to 13.6V on the return trip. I never seen anything under 13.4V.

I have a Volt meter permanently in the cigi lighter.

You need to take a few factors into consideration

Battery, alternator and temperatures I've seen 13.7/8 in warm weather and as high as 15.4/5 in cold Thumbs Up

What problems are you having ?

Could be battery on way out or alternator as 12.9 indicates to me that it's not getting/holding a sufficient charge.

Andy, respond to Geoff and he will advise, he is a guru.

Why do you ask ?

It doesn't sound too bad to me if your switching everything on, and at low idle.

Voltage shouldn't drop to 12.9v with heated screen etc on. Alternator voltage should increase to cope with it.

Do you get low power mode displayed on the radio when turned above 20 with everything turned on ?

^^

Not always, depends on the charge state of the battery, if you have a failed alternator, you get about 20 miles before the car dies due to lack of electricity, been there done that Rolling with laughter

Are you using it daily without issue?

I had a brand new genuine L/R alternator fitted last Friday.

I now have a issue when the car is starting from cold, it starts then:

Radio cuts in and out.
Dashboard displays pulsate at the same time engine revs up and down by itself.
Handbrake light comes on ( handbrake is off) flashing orange!

This occurs for only a short time before things return to normal.

Here is a video showing the voltage variation:

Now driving to work in the morning when it is about 3 - 7 degrees the alternator is putting out approx 15.5v but I also saw some spike of 17.5v and once 18v!

Car is going in tomorrow to get another genuine alternator fitted Wink

It's used every day and no issues. Then fitted a second battery and split charge VSR, with monitor, also fitted a new exide battery. The monitor, and other meters are showing that I'm getting 13.6v at tick over and whilst driving, so the problem that I have is that the VSR that I've installed is cutting in, then out constantly. The same system has been installed on my last Defender where all was ok. My concern is that I've got a brand new starter battery, and brand new alternator, and a unused leisure battery that is not going to be charged as the voltage is not high enough (above 13.8v) to keep the split charge relay switched on. It just keeps clicking in out, in out.

No the voltage should not increase. The ideal is that the voltage remains constant.
But this depends on the alternator rating being sufficient and idle speed high enough.

The current out of the alternator will increase.
