sorted - another set of valves did the trick - and the D4 autosenses the new ID's after about a mile of driving 
Just need to work out why the first set didnt work, as they have all the same markings on as the second set

 Have to say I was a tad pessimistic after buying a set of TPMS valves off ebay and having them fitted to my winter wheels, was told they may need coding etc but swapped the wheels over and they worked straight away showing the correct pressures

I've just purchased 20" alloys and was a bit concerned about the TPMS valves. The new wheels are take offs from a new car and are coming with the TPMS valves, so it's reassuring to know that the car will pick up the valves. 23.5MY Defender 90 X-Dynamic SE D250 MHEV Pangea Green

Bought a set of genuine LR alloys that came with TPMS, tyre fitter checked they were working on his tester and lo and behold they synced with the car at the first attempt.

Its not always that straight forward, as the set that my car wouldn't recognise were seen by the tyre fitters hand held gizmo - it showed the ID code, pressure, etc, but the car still wouldnt see them.
Anyway - seller is refunding my money, so all is well
