Brake pad wear warning

Got a brake pad wear warning on the dashboard on Saturday (on 31k miles from new). OK thinks I, I'll take it in for new pads some time in the next week or two.

Yesterday (Monday) - after less than 50 miles since the warning appeared - I started to hear grating sounds when braking and on inspection found that the rear n/s pad was down to the metal and had scored the disk. It's going in to Team Valley LR on Thursday for new pads and rear disks Rolling Eyes

So, questions I have are:

- Is 31k for brake pad renewal reasonable ?

- Am I being unreasonable in expecting to have several hundred miles safety margin after the warning light appears, before the pads hit the steel ?

- Can the workshop recover from the vehicle diagnostics the time / mileage when the warning first appeared ? (If so that would prove my case if I attempt to claim off LR because the bp warning light didn't come on early enough).

Out of the 8 pads on the vehicle only 2 have a warning circuit.

Quite normal on most car brands, I think. Rolling Eyes

Some pads will wear quicker than others, for various reasons. A brake pad warning indicator is no substitute for a regular visual inspection. Thumbs Up

Hmm, so I have found! Evil or Very Mad

I wonder how many people actually know that - or, like me, rely on the indicator. TBH if that's the case it'd be better without any ...

I have one of those pen-style pad gauges that takes the faff out of measuring pad thickness when installed.

Thumbs Up

It would not bother me hugely as I would replace discs and pads at that mileage in any case when the light came on. Just replacing the latter would be a false economy IMHO.

I'm lucky to get 31k from a set of discs (in fact, I don't think I ever have) let alone a set of pads.
