Reverse Gear Engagement: Is this a fault?

I can't believe this has anything to do with my driving impatience, but is more a fault of the 6-Speed ZF gearbox, and perhaps an age-related (the car that is!) one at that.

In the past few months I've noticed that, when selecting reverse after drive, the gearbox can take a second or two (seems like longer sometimes but it's probably not!) to engage and allow me to actually manoeuvre. As this is certainly a weekly and quite possibly a daily occurrence, I have done my own non-mechanical tests by ensuring that I do let the car stop before selecting reverse and do ensure I maintain pressure on the brake pedal before moving from drive to reverse.

The car was first registered in July 2011, is a MY11 and has 86k miles on the clock. I'm the second owner but it's always been main stealer serviced/maintained and on time.

So, anyone else experienced this with the 6-Speed (or even 8-Speed) box?

Only seen that on a 6-speed with a linkage that needs lubricating.

Is lubricating the linkage as easy as fitting the rear ladder or emptying the ashtray Rolling with laughter

Mine was always the same, seemed to take a few seconds to (what felt like) build pressure and engage drive/reverse

New box is the same, though not as pronounced, but can still catch out 1St gear if you are too quick with the throttle pedal...

Thanks Disco_Mikey. Was I right in thinking the gear linkage is the component shown in pic 2 of your wiki? And if I am lubricating it, what lubricant should I use and what exactly am I lubricating (the shaft or linkage components themselves)?

Did lubricating that linkage sort it?

Mine did this to me today, trying to do a 3 point turn and no drive in reverse for a couple of seconds followed by a slight shudder and then we started to move. Was a bit unnerving at the time as I was casuing a minor obstruction Embarassed

Mine is the same age as the op. And mine does this. I reverse up a gradient to get on my drive and it feels like it is slipping or not engaging very quickly. Last night I had no drive in reverse and had to go back to park then r and then I had drive. My d3 never did this.
My d4 has 1 previous owner to me and 60000 on it

Is this likely to be the linkage?
 Upgrades so far - , rear ladder from prospeed , front and rear light guards G4 style roof rack and 4 lightforce spots on the rack! Xenon lights
