Ooo - NSN - now I'm interested (and gives me a reason to come to the next SEMeet)
I already have an unmarked (and therefore unrated) strap and shackles - time to sort this out
Whats the most appropriate length of strap to have then?Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)
Taz,
It all depends on what you get up to. I get involved with winching & recovery work off road, therefore I carry a lot of kit.
If you are just an occasional off roader then you obviously need a lot less kit.
I would suggest that you need 2 strops 1 short say 3-4 metre & 1 long say a 6 metre.
Strops are easier to store, easier to clean and easier to spot dammage on, compared to ropes in my opinion.
Make sure that you keep the kit out of the reach of the sun when not in use!
I suggest you need 2 shackles per strop & as I suggested earlier why not get 2 large and 2 small. In that way you get flexibility.
I always carry a shovle as well.
That should get you started.
please call 07884066643 for further advice if necessary as I can talk a good not but it don't always come out of the key pad when typeing.

Hi NSN, I need just one 4.75 shackle. I'm happy to send you a cheque, but I might not be able to make it to a meeting. I regularly drive up the M4 though. Perhaps I could collect from your work?
Thanks.
SN,
The slick answer is one that is long enough for the job next time you need one, or a little as possible and as much as you need.
As I have indicated in the previous answer, its horses for courses.
Your untested equipment may indeed be fine but the thing is no one knows.
Also dont' get the impression that because you may have all the latest rated gear that it won't break becuse it does and I have seen it happen.
All you can do is use best practice of using the proper equipment.
