Explanation???????????

Hi,

Due to expectant bad weather conditions for this year I purchased and fitted a Ctek charger on the wall in the garage and a 'Comfort Control Panel' onto the front grill of my Disco 4. For the last week I have had the charger on, trickle charging the battery(I do not use my Disco very often, maybe once or twice a month) anyway yesterday was one of those days that it was in use. Disconnected the lead from the comfort panel and the green fully charged LED was flashing away as it should have been. Did my days driving some 40 - 50mls. returned home and Disco to the garage.

As I passed the front I noticed the comfort panel LED flashing red. Alarm bells started ringing. Checked the battery voltage and it was showing 15.45 so fully charged. After a few minutes the LED changed to amber, then a little later to green. Still flashing green this morning.

Anyone have a sensible explanation.??? as to why it show a reversal of its condition, is this a common procedure.

All perfectly normal. The CTEK on green was telling you it had finished the task of charging your battery and the battery was fully charged. When you reconnected the CTEK after a short drive it started the charging cycle from square one checking the battery's condition but quickly realised the battery was fully charged so went to green.

15.45V is a bit scarily high for a 12V battery, that could be what the charger is pumping out?

15.45v seems too high for a battery voltage.

Did you check the battery voltage with the charger connected?

I believe the ctek charger only pumps out upto 15.8v on the recond option. And 14.4/14.7 v in normal / agm mode

First off would be what kind of battery have you got - normal or AGM? Secondly, how have you connected the Comfort Control Panel to the battery? I'll assume that the +ve cable is connected to Battery +ve and that the -ve cable is connected to a good chassis ground and NOT the -ve battery terminal!

The fact that the Comfort Panel flashes red for a bit, then Amber then green is probably due to the vehicle shutting down it's systems and going to sleep. Depending on how you lock the car, (or not), it can take up to 30 minutes to fully shut down and go to sleep.

I agree with the others that 15.45V is very high for a 12v battery. On my AGM, the highest I've ever achieved is about 13v!

A fully charged battery ( at rest ) should read 12.6v, that is 6 cells each producing 2.1volts. The cycling of the lights you are seeing is, as said before, just the CTEK going through its normal procedure. With a fully charged battery it will cycle through quickly, with a flat battery it will take much longer, hours in fact.

As for the 15 volts that could only be with the engine running or on charge - and that's about as high as it goes. Check your multi meter.

Thanks for all the replies.

I must explain a little further.

The charger was not connected. I had just parked after a long run and the battery reading was taken as soon as the engine was switched off. All readings are now as normal 12.7.

I was just curious as to why the comfort panel was showing a red LED light after a long run. I always double lock the car on leaving.

That sounds like a better voltage Thumbs Up Mine does the same thing, but as soon as the car's gone to 'sleep', the Comfort Indicator returns to flashing green. It just shows how much is going on in the vehicle after you turn the engine off and lock it!
