is fitting a tow bar to a 2014 d4 commercial a simple DIY job or does it need laptop assistance for the electrics. what would be a reasonable cost to have this done at a garage

You can DIY but you'll need a garage (or a member of here with an IID or whatever) to fettle the electrics once fitted. I had it done at the same time as a service and was charged nowt.

Just out of interest what is the laptop needed for? I thought seeing as the electrics are already there then it would just be a bolt-on job?

Have you checked the back passenger side cubby hole to see if there is a tow bar already there to be fitted? I had a pleasant surprise when mine arrived with one. The current courtesy car also has one tucked away in there too.

The car needs telling that the electrics have been connected .. You also have to tell it which electrics you have fitted ( 13 pin / 7s etc etc )

tom1979 then your car knows about your tow electrics.

There is a configuration file (CCF) that tells the car what is fitted to it so that everything works correctly.

Example: If your car rolled off the factory line with halogens and no tow electrics then you go and fit xenon's and tow electrics, the xenon's won't work correctly (they will flicker on startup) and the tow electrics won't be completely integrated with the car until you update the CCF.

Your car is a giant 3T rolling computer

So I think if I were to put a proper towbar on rather than the normal one and use the same electrics it will be just a bolt on job. I don't know what else the car needs to know as everything is already there and working.

You don't need to tell it you have fitted a different tow bar .. It's only the electrical side that would need enabling

That's what I thought wiggs, and as the electrics are already enabled it should be a bolt on and forget job.
