| So here's a new one: Engine not stopping! |

Mods: please could this be moved to the faults and fixes section as that seems to be where it fits best?
So this morning I got up, and half an hour before my commute to the station pressed the remote FBH button (only mentioned in case this has something to do with the issue). Breakfast etc say goodbye and out the door. Car starts, is nice and warm quick and drives fine. Got to the station (late as usual), car into a parking spot, keys out, jump out and go for the train.
Except the engine was still running. Lights on, everything working. But I was stood outside the car with the keys in my hand. 
Cured by re-inserting key and attempting to start (clunk) and then switching off. Maybe (hopefully) it was just a one off electrical bug, but has anyone ever heard of this or had it before? It was noisy in the car park and fortunate I noticed otherwise I'd have gone to work and left the engine running! Seems an expensive way to heat the car for my return.

Worn ignition barrel allowing the key to be removed without the ignition being taken completely off position I?
Seems unlikely on a modern car but I seem to recall I had this a very long time ago on an Austin Metro. Come to think of it, that was also the car I use to start by touching a bolt across the back of the ignition because the ignition switch had failed - I got an electric shock every time until I wrapped the bolt in tape

Heh thanks for the responses. Particularly the electric shock everytime you started the car
Blue Meanie, I take it that as long as it's caught and you don't wander off leaving the engine running then there's no other issues or side effects? Is it likely I'll come back to the car and not be able to start it one day because the key doesn't read?

My sister had a similar problem in an almost new Volvo a few years ago. The car wouldn't stop so she stalled it and it restarted all on its own without the keys. Turned out to be the solonid on the starter motor was stuck in the on position.
On the other thing 12V shouldn't give you a shock behind the key switch. The only place for a shock would be from a spark plug lead. I have often started tractors with a wrench across the leads on the back of the starter motor without any shock,,, and I'm very sensitive to stray electricity.

Ive had this, it was caused by a dodgy brake light bulb. I believe it can be caused by the brake pedal switch as well.
