Fumes, how does yours smell!

Noticed recently my 2010 D4 exhaust fumes are getting stronger, anyone had experience of this or have any ideas what I should check? I use shell or BP diesel, just been serviced runs and drives fine small amount of smoke on start up but nothing when driving any ideas?

It could be the DPF doing a regen

By bad smell are we talking rotten eggs (sulphur)?

Think I’ve read that all D4’s have a DPF, though it might just be the SD versions. A vin check would settle it.

Cheers Kilovolt an interesting read, mine doesn’t smell like rotten eggs just real strong exhaust fumes, I’ve no codes registered wondered if it was a dodgy Egr/ map / maf sensor but again no codes, MPG is around 26 - 28 which I think is ok ( AT tyres roof rack laddder etc) so not over thirsty, maybe I’ll check the live values and see if there’s any difference on the map sensors etc may also try the cat temp check as it’s easiest!

Before then, It needed the DPF for Euro 5 compliance for January 2011.

VIN number will show you if it has a dpf, here is a sample one
SAL = Land Rover UK
LA = Discovery 3/4
A = Standard
A = 4 Door
G = 3.0 TDV6 with DPF

Unique 6 Digit Vehicle Serial Number

How very handy! I’m an ‘F’ 3.0 TDV6 so no DPF, I’ve only ever read bad things about crossover pipes, looks like I’ve some searching to do!

Now getting what I think are exhaust fumes inside the cabin on start up and when sitting at idle, it’s stronger on start up
Does anyone have a layout for the air ducting? Figured I could look along it’s route for issues I’ve looked on lrcat but couldn’t find it

I get a strong sulphur smell when idling for extended periods. Fortunately there’s no smell in the cabin though.
To be honest I thought it was normal for Diesel engines. Back when I was working on the roads we used to leave the engine of our vans running for hours and It was common for them to start smelling, Merc Sprinters were the worst offenders!

There's no external air ducting as such, fresh air is drawn in from the plenum chamber under the plastic cover which can be seen beneath the wipers.

If you have exh fumes in the cabin it needs to be investigated for obvious reasons. In the meantime you could try "recirculation" on the HVAC panel which will prevent fresh air entering and hopefully keep the exh fumes out until diagnosed.
