Riding Height Question

Just a quick query. What's the advantage of the lower height setting? I would assume it drops down automatically when driving over certain speeds but have no evidence for this. But is there any advantage in dropping to the lower setting when driving around town - would it improve body role for example?

It doesn't drop automatically, you need to set it yourself, mainly for improving access for getting in and out, or you can lock it for a low car park for example.

Otherwise, it returns to normal height automatically when you drive away. The ride is horrible when it's lowered.

IIRC, the ride height drops when speed > 160kmh, sustained.

Even if it's locked, does it not return to standard hight when driving over 20mph or something?

Does anyone know how much it drops the overall height by? I didn't go into a car park the other the day (probably a good thing anyway) as the height restriction was about 10cm under the height noted on the sun visor. On my friends quite old RR, it shows on the dash when the suspension drops - I'm surprised my modern D4 doesn't? Weird.....

The display on mine tells me when the car is raising or lowering, so yours should.

You are right, my handbook is in the car but I think I remember reading it lowered at 111 mph (or something equally stupid).

I will have to let my wife take it for a drive as she is the only one who will get near that speed! Shocked

I don't have all the height stuff on my screen, she's an XS, but I've been told it's an easy diag fix. My friends RR drops at 60mph - seems to make more sense than 100!
Yes, I can see on the switche when she drops, but hadn't noticed anything up to about 70mph - but then I haven't gone above 100mph either - and not really sure I'd want to!!
Thanks for your help.

I do have the 4x4 info enabled on my XS which does show the ride height, but the screen between the speedo and rev counter will tell you what's going on.

Thanks Fitzy73
Yes it does and the other day it was mirrored on the sat screen too, but I can't seem to get that back now. But it was only a mirror of the rotation selector, not the full 4x4 screen.

You can get the 4x4 info screen on temporarily, as it sounds you have already done.

I think you need to turn the ignition on, then select any setting on the terrain response dial, then start the engine, after that you can return the terrain response to normal, but the 4x4 info will remain.

Yep, I think the only reasons for lowering the ride height are to allow persons of short stature to embark and alight easier and to avoid hazards from above. I don't think there's any driving advantage except at warp speed 10.

England

Not just of 'short stature' but also elderly or less abled - still miss the grab handle on the 'A pillar' (I think? - the pillar by the windscreen....) on my previous Land Cruisers. Wish I had included that observation on the Land Rover manufacture questionnaire that I completed recently - completely forgot about it..... (which maybe shows how I have got used to getting in without it?)....
