They're trying to make the alternator sound more advanced than it really is. It just generates power.

No really, it only does what it is told to do by the PCM (although you can trick it into a regular dumb alternator mode). I've written previously on how it all works and more recently on the D4 system that takes it to a new level. I have received many a look when I explain to owners that their new battery has been toasted in the summer weather because they didn't get their inaccurate outside air temperature sensor fixed. It is a computer controlled charging system that responds to many variables and sensed values.

Thumbs Up

Speaking with Tintenter a few days ago, he mentioned the outside temperature gauge being a few degrees out. I thought nothing of it until he explained that the external temp sensor has all kinds of data effects on many parts of the D4 including engine, transmission etc.
It was a bit of an eye opener really where such a 'minor' thing can have profound effects on the whole running and costs of a vehicle.

Robbies comment is another bit of education for me.
Are D4owners aware of how much it may be costing them simply as a result of this?

This snippet will not effect the MY16 owners as their temp gauge is over-reading slightly, plus later D4s are capped at around 14.7v anyway.
