Two posters in another thread about comparing the six speed & eight speed gearbox have said that the 8 speed gear box appears to increase fuel consumption.
I don't want to hijack that thread, and would like to keep this thread focussed on fuel consumption only.
I had thought that LR introduced the eight speed gearbox to meet higher emission & efficiency standards, and would have expected better fuel economy, rather than the contrary.
What please is peoples' experience regarding fuel consumption? May I politely suggest that it if you are going to quote actual fuel consumption for 6 & 8 speed cars you detail how you recorded it, and over what mileage.
I await responses with interest.

Hi - not quite a straight answer, but I went from a 2009 Euro 4 D3 auto, to a 2012 D4 8 speed auto, and certain literature out there suggested that the D4 would be more economical - absolutely not - its exactly the same as my d3 2.7 with 6 speed auto was. Whatever journey I make (and I make the same journeys in the D4 that I did in the D3, over the same roads), steady cruising gives 30/31, knocking around town is 22/23, towing 1700kg of tintent is 19/20, all the same as in the D3. This is from brim to brim fill ups, calculated against miles covered, and not from the lieometer.
I reset the trip comp at every fill up - always have. Just cleared 60k miles in the D4, D3 had just over this when I sold it.

I've had them all.
On a like for like driving basis, the D4 6 speed is marginally better than the D3 and the 8 speed D4 is marginally better than the 6 speed D4.
In the real world of mixed driving there's really very little difference between them all. Especially as it's tempting to use the better acceleration that the 8 speed offers
Using the Road Trip Lite app, I've averaged 27.93mpg over the last 6,102 miles in my 2015 D4 (total mileage 8,386). The best was 31.59mpg Bath-London-Manchester and back. Worst was 25.42mpg towing a 20ft twin axle trailer with a lot of weight on it.
I reckon I used to average just under 26mpg in the D3. Not scientific in anyway, just a few brim to brim calculations and 140k miles of experience.
At a steady real 72 mph (satellite Road Angel) the 8 speed does give better mpg. Again not scientific.

I think the biggest factor has to be a) your right foot, and b) what weight you are carrying/towing, just looked at my stats over the last 20K miles on a 6 speed D4 with 105K on the clock and I have averaged in total 28.6MPG and this a mix of me on my own doing 70mph (real) on the motorway, and sometimes fully loaded boot, and sometimes towing 3 tonnes. Some fills I have averaged 32.4, and some 24.3 so you can get out of it what you want.

our 63 plate d4 8 speed does very well at steady revs..but what an enjoyable drive...you cant have it all
don't forget its 2.6 tons

As you can see they are all pretty similar, but I do prefer the 8 speed to the 6 speed Cheers Ian

Only difference in use is that the D3's were 30k business miles per year, lots of fast motorway. D4 is now doing less miles, less motorway, more everyday driving.

And the new RR SDV6 is about 39avg. Hopefully that will translate into the D5 and make a good reason to change

10 plate D4 XS covered 34935 miles used 1533 gallons at a cost of £9,172 worked out to 22.8mpg.
06 plate D3 S returned an almost identical figure.
Too early to say on my 15 plate.2015 D4 HSE in Corris Grey

I must admit I'm quite surprised that the D4 doesn't give you any mpg figures, leaving you to work it out! I'm also surprised at how small the tank is.

what are you talking about - the trip comp gives you MPG figures, both average and instant (OK, not that acurate, but it does provide them). And how big a tank do you want, isnt 80odd litres enough (seem big enough to me when costing over 100 to fill it up late last year)?

It contains 84 litres, approximately 3 of which are not useable to protect the high pressure system. The D4 fuel gauge is very conservative and typically shows empty with around 14 litres (11 useable) left in the tank.

Erm, well I've had the car less than a week so obviously I've not completely got the grasp of it yet, I can't find an MPG read out anywhere, but thanks for letting me know it's there I'll keep at it
The tanks in my last 3 cars have been 100ltrs, so 80 is 20% smaller, I'd rather have a bigger tank as it's less filling up

its part of the trip comp - you can set two different trip comps, and set in MPG or L/per Km
the button the end of left hand stalk lets you scroll through whats displayed on screen between the speedo/rev counter
