Been thinking this morning about tyres and why people change wheels. On the photo below (or is it above) you can see the difference between the car with the standard Goodyear Wrangler 255/60R18 tyres on the front and the "Range Rover Sport" Goodyear Wrangler 255/55R18s on the back. (I'm getting them refurbished two at a time, front first). Thinking the lower profile tyres would be better, it transpired on this vehicle, they were distinctly inferior to the standard. Several years ago I had some Pirelli Zero 255/60R19 tyres fitted to 19" wheels and they also weren't as good as the original 18" wheels and tyres. But even with 18" there are differences. The H rated 255/60R18 Wranglers are rated at 130mph and the V rated 255/60R18 Wranglers are rated at 141mph. Though this beast becomes a different bread over the "normal" road speeds through the twisties, and is very chuckable, both tyres are good but the V rated is definitely the better. If you thought this car was a brick good only for off road, try taking it beyond your normal boundaries and you'll find you want to leave the Alfa Romeo Spider (showing off now) in the garage and play in the Disco.
So my view is if you're making a cake, don't change granny's recipe. I've come back to the tyre Land Rover recommend and if I'd listened to them in the first place, based on the fact, they've spent millions testing, then my years of really good enjoyable driving could have been that little bit better.

it might be more down to the 255/55x18's not being weight rated high enough for the D3, as I'll bet they were only 107 or 108's, and not 112's as the 255/60x18's would be.

Based on the principle that bull baffles brains, I thought I may have got away with that one but I forgot that there are some on here who's anoraks are bigger than mine. So, having been found out, could you explain the difference between the weight ratings please and how it effects the ratios?

Wouldn't 255/55/18's on one axle and 255/60/18's on the other wind up the transmission?

Not sure about that but I'm only running them a mile and they're changed over on Monday to run all 255/60 R18s. I would have thought that it wouldn't scrub that much off the tyres......depending of course that the diff survives..

The weight rating doesnt affect the fact that your two different ratio profiles (55 on one axle and 60's on the other), what it does men is that you've tyres that are under spec in their weight load rating for the car. Like you say, soon to be sorted anyway

Hi guys, and gals
I have the RR 20" on my disco3, using a tyre 255/50/20 on it! (Im sure its 50 but may be 55)
My OH bought me 275/45/20 as a winter tyre and ATS have refused to fit it!
Should I cause havoc with them or are they right?? Further down the post someone has said that this is the alternative size for my wheels!!

275/45/20 is a straight swap for a 255/50x20, in terms of size, so go somewhere else if those muppets dont want to fit them.
But - both a 255/50x20 and a 275/45x20 will be weight rated just under the D3 tyre weight spec, as those two are probably 110 or 109 rated (so D4 and RRS spec), but the D3 is 111. The 275 are most likely 110 (which I've run before with no issues) and the 255's are 109 (or may even be lower, 107)
I'd rather run the 275/45's (if I wasnt already running 265/50x20 111W's )
