Rear prop shaft

Hi all

It seems the rubber mount to the centre bearing on my D3 rear prop shaft has now failed and has split.

I'm going to go down the route of ordering a new prop shaft, I've been looking on the Advanced Factors site for the prop and bolts.

Couple of questions I have, would anyone recommend this is a job I could tackle myself I can get the D3 in off road height and on a pair of ramps which I think will give enough clearance. Do I need to buy all new bolts and locking tabs, and what size sockets do I need for each end of the prop shaft?

Are there any specific instructions on how to change it, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Lee

Swapped mine without any problems.
The flange fixings are "star" bolts so you will need female star sockets, Haynes says you must replace the flange bolts. One heat shield to remove then flange each end and the centre beating fixings. From memory I jacked up one rear wheel so I could rotate the shaft (EPB off) - found it easier to access all the flange bolts. Off road height is ok but I still used axle stands for safety. Chock wheels etc.

I changed my D3 propshaft a few years ago. A very straightforward job and I am not an experienced mechanic. You will need at least one rear wheel off the ground so you can rotate the shaft to get access to all the bolts. You may also need some large washers at hand to re-secure the heat shield because the heat shield attachment holes may have become enlarged/corroded.

Make sure the wheels are well chocked and hand brake is on before removing the bolts if working under ramps, once the bolts are removed you will not have any engine braking, one member was nearly killed by not doing so when removing propshaft Thumbs Up

Another forum member fixed his split prop centre bearing rubber with sikaflex and Im sure he said it had done another 40k and was still okay, sikaflex roughly 15 quid a tube.
The female torx sockets all begin with an E ie E10 E12 etc
