Helpful thoughts on D4 purchase please |
|
I am looking at next new toy and surprise its a D4.
My dilemma is with circa 25k to spend on a pre-loved one do I go for a 2011 xs or a 2012 gs.
I have always had XS spec on landies but is the engine / gbox update on the 2012 worth the extra cash or down speccing?

Hi downtime and welcome. Best thing would be a test drive if the 2 different cars, but personally I'd go for the MY12 with the 8 speed

Yes, 8 spd is worth holding out for, and £25k should secure an XS on the right day. Long succession of Disco's since 2001...

I had the pleasure of a spirited ride in an 8 speed and quite honestly the performance was breathtaking, the gear changes could hardly be detected, if you want ultimate speed, power and smoothness go for the 8 speed.
Hopefully in the later model the big end shells have been modified not to spin It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

I went the other way and went for a 11MY HSE with 6spd box. I'm happy as I like all the extras on the higher trim version but the box does feel a bit dated the way it changes but still happy with my choice, couldn't have had a GS with cloth seats, just too basic.

The 8 speed box is a definite plus, but don't think that you'll be hard done by if you buy the 6 speed. It's still an awesome vehicle all round. I guess it'll be a question of what you see for your money and what you value the most. Happy hunting.

I'm saving my pennies for a 12my 8 speed, once you drive one you'll want one.

After driving both an 8 speed and now my 6 speed 2011 D4 I'd say buy a 6 speed HSE and get it remapped by Bell. Your'll save money, get the same performance(if not better when you consider the low down torque and smoother running) and get a great 6 speeder for £25k. See my post in the Forum Sponsors section regarding my D4 remap. cheers,

IMO the 3.0 & 8 speed combo is the biggest improvement to the Disco in the last 10 years even over the D4 facelift. I sometimes get to drive a 6 speed and when i do it always hits me how different they are I always thought my 2.7 6 speed was superb but getting back into my current one after a day in a 6 speed its always the drivetrain that i notice, it just allows you to "make progress" so effortlessly and smoothly. I had exactly the same decision to make back in October and decided to stick out for an 8sp. Got a 12MY GS with leather interior and a couple of other extras. You can retrofit some extras for not too much money. I'm just about to fit the cruise button panel to get that up and running. And I prefer having my own satnav with its live traffic updates rather than the built in jobbee. Another nice upgrade is remote operation of the fuel burning heater to get the car defrosted on a cold morning.
Hope that helps

8 speed and 3 litre are what really make a 4 such a different vehicle to the 3
If I had to stay 6 speed or 2.7 then I'd stick with the far

Lack of gadgets put me off, I would rather have a higher spec 6 speed sdv6 than a GS, but granted the 8 speeder is lovely.
Coming from a D3, the better engine, suspension, and general drive of a high spec 6 speed swung it for me.
I paid £23k for a My 11 Sdv6 HSE with 68k "you cannot teach stupid people to do clever things"
