STEERING WHEEL JUDDER?

Hi guys,

a couple of weeks ago whilst traveling back from Scotland I had a bit of a steering wheel judder and thought I was slipping on ice but I happened a couple of times after.

I took it in to my local independent land rover garage and had him check breaks and callipers and he couldn't find anything wrong with it and even when he took it out for a drive he could find no fault with it Rolling Eyes

Now tonight coming home from work each time I stop and traffic lights or a junction and accelerate away it seems as though the steering wheel is going to shake out of my hands Shocked

Once you accelerate over 30 it settles down however its went from intermittent to OMG my steering's going to give at any minute in a day Sad

Does anyone have any idea what is going on here? Has anyone else had the same problem?

Many thanks for your help

Kenny

its just been trough an MOT last Thursday and it has the following advisory:

OFFSIDE REAR LOWER SUSPENSION ARM HAS SLIGHT PLAY IN PIN/BEARING (2.4.G.2)
PALY IN STEERING RACK INNER JOINT (S)

Wondered if this or one of these could be a cause? Shocked

I will watch this thread with interest Kenny as I'm having a similar issue. Every now and then mine starts to shake as if driving over rumble strips and then gets to the point where I think it will shake itself to bits.
The only way to get rid of it is to slow right down ( much to the disgust of drivers behind me )
I have also had it checked out and nothing has been found

Next time you get this shake, if possible, quickly pull over and check the rear discs for heat. I had this and felt it through the steering but on investigation it turned out to be a rear caliper.

Oh, and it came on faster / worse at 75+mph!!

Good luck. Thumbs Up

Mine done this for a while. Mot with same advisories. I replaced lower arms and it now feels like a new motor. Well worth losing nuckles and 2 pints of blood in process.

When you say steering rods are they the same thing as inner track rods ?

OK guys a bit of an update on this issue of mine Rolling Eyes

I was booked in today to do a 4 wheel alignment however over the past week the issue has become more constant and not just intermittent so didn't see the point in taking her in and wasting money.

I've been paying more attention to the steering now obviously because it is more noticeable and although the tracking is out which makes driving a bit of hard work, I have also noticed that the play/give in the steering wheel is rather more than I have noticed before.

Driving in a straight line such as on the motorway my steering has a noticeable 1 degrees free movement from centre both left and right meaning you have to move the steering wheel a bit before it actually takes bite. I guess the only way I could describe it is that it is like driving a Series 3 land rover, constantly correcting your driving.

I also noticed the last time I was in the lakes that going over rough ground that the steering wheel feels completely loose in your hands and that it didn't actually appear to be snug in its housing, Or it was going to rattle out of my hands Laughing

So although i've had my car in to the garage 3 times so far and each time no faults found each time, I am leaning very much on the side of the possibility of my steering arm and UJ being the source of the problem Shocked

Yes Kenny sounds like your steering arm's and lower steering u.j is fooked..What you discribe is tramlining ..

You need to order the kit from Steve@ Advanced

I would also fit 2 of these at the same time..

Then these for your steering.
