Has anyone replaced their XY sensor...
Without dropping the box? (oh and Hi - nice site, plenty of info )
We are just finishing a rebuild after a fuel pump fire. New looms, fuel pump, vacuum pump, rocker covers, slave cylinder piping, etc etc... And are struggling with the XY sensor.
I've managed to get one bolt out by squeezing my arm up the side of the box after removing the prop, but cant see any other way of getting to the other without at least dropping the back of the box a bit.
Any pointers chaps?
Thanks, Tony.

Tony,
I removed cross member under gear box. Support gearbox on a jack so you can lower the back it just about gives enough room to get a hand in.

Why do you suspect the XY sensor and have you tried the calibration procedure?Freelander SE 2005 Auto.

Ahhh mate! Thats just what I wanted to hear! Thanks.
Pain in the or what though!! Think I'll be glad if I never work on a disco 3 again - my old disco 2 was a doddle in comparison!

Because it is burnt to a crisp, and the wires connecting to it are now just thin strands of copper moulded into the top of it lol.
Even the speed sensor on the side got it - that was crispy too, although simple to replace in comparison!
Only XY sensor to go, bleed brakes, then arch liners in and its done!

What a pain in the a**e to remove. Anyway, its all back together now and we are having a few electrical gremlins - Christmas tree lights on the dash, suspension fault, lots of warnings etc etc
I am having an issue connecting to the transfer box control module with my Delphi interface. What are the chances of it being faulty? Is there anything else I could have missed?

Got it all running now. It runs and drives fine but have xmas tree lights on dash.
Also have the following warnings -
HDC fault,
special functions off,
suspension lowered,
I cannot get any of the suspension settings to change - it sits just above the bump stops and sometimes goes up and down on its own. If you press HDC or play with the ride height selector, the instrument cluster bongs and pops up another warning.
I have tried connecting my delphi diagnostics to all modules, and I can read and clear codes on everything including lighting modules etc but cannot connect to ABS Module or Transfer Case Module! Is one linked to the other? I am getting no communication with TCS module and ABS module faults on the rest of the modules.
I have also noticed a worn ABS sensor on front left - the wires are nearly through the casing. But this wouldn't explain why it wont connect to the rest?
Any ideas chaps?
Thanks.

Most on here use dedicated diagnostic tools as anything else is a little hit or miss.
Quite a few faults can trigger your symptoms but a damaged ABS sensor is one of them, so start there.

Right, Swapped sensor for a Bosch one and no joy.
Also bought some 'proper' Lucas 21w bulbs for the rear as one was out and replaced them all - still no difference.
Now time to call on the electrical guru's... (although I will start a dedicated thread for more exposure)
I have fitted an Auto loom to my manual car after the engine fire. (Was told by MMJ there would be no problem or differences)
One multi plug sits loose around the ECU area - possibly a 40 or 50 pin slide connection that I assume would connect to the Autobox ECU if it had one (This has a few twisted yellow/black CAN wires in the loom). This then connects to the piece that runs into the cabin to the interior fusebox behind glovebox.
What I am thinking is, as the system runs CAN - if this module is not fitted could it be the missing link stopping the rest of the system from there onwards from communicating? From what I have read it goes from TCS module and terminates at the ABS unit. I cannot find a full flow diagram showing in which order the systems are connected, and I cannot for the life of me get my Mongoose cable working to do an integrity test!!
Does anyone have any wiring diagrams I can scratch my head over, or even know for certain if the two looms differ - or if I can bypass the Auto ECU connector so that it keeps the rest in check?
Thanks again in advance for your help.
Tony.

I hate searching the net for answers to find that someone had similar symptoms but never updated the thread with results!!
For those interested the follow on thread with my success story (so far) is here -
