Fuel gauge intermittent should this cost £1100 to repair ??? |
|
I know there is some stuff about it on here but it doesn't seem to match my trucks issue.
When I brim the tank more often than not the fuel gauge will drop to zero sometimes returning on its own other times after ignition off and on again. It does drop at different tank levels also but more so when brimmed.
Would a wiring issue cause this or are the senders shot ?
I spoke to a Land Rover dealer and they told me you can't get the senders for my year anymore and I require a new tank and senders to the tune of £1100 !!!!!
I really can't see this being the case so any help would be appreciated.
For the record my truck hasn't come to a shuddering halt as others have advised would happen when driving with 'no fuel' is doesn't seem to affect it in any way.
Thanks in advance.

Firstly I would check the connections, if all ok I would shop around a bIt or go down the second hand route, but I am sure the real discovery 3 tech guys will be along to assist

Simple solution don't brim the tank. I have experience this fault and cured it at no expense, explaining in lay mans terms by a layman consider the gauge to be like the face of a clock, when the clock hands reach 12 the next figure is 1, so on your gauge when your needle reaches full the next figure going in the direction of the gauge is empty, the cure in my case was to remove the needle on the gauge and reposition it so that when it came to rest with the engine off slightly lower, not a job for the faint hearted and it can take several attempts to get it right. I would suggest you just don't brim it...... It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Thanks for your reply. That method will not help it dropping when the tank is not brimmed though as it does it at different levels too.
