Best Fuel Consumption?

I currently drive a Mondeo 1.6 Titanium X Ecotech and get around 55mpg. I've had an LR3 when I lived overseas as well as TD5 in the UK. I would love to get a Disco 3 again as I totally love them. I do around 20k miles a year and am really careful how I drive to eek out as much from each tank fill as possible. To that end I wondered what is the best anyone has had mpg wise from a D3 and if there are any mods I could do to improve it in any way?
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Best mpg? 30. Once.

Averaged 24 over the last 135k miles. I do about 25k miles a year so about £6k in fuel.

Best mod? Nothing that will get your money back. Remap might improve it, but not enough to justify it on its own.

28 to 34 mpg on a long run and around town and short journeys expect 22 to 24 mpg with the auto box. Thats what i get with my D3. Others on here may have different results.

Stick to the Mondeo 1.6, you will be lucky to see 27MPG most of the time you will see between 24 / 26mpg. These are not designed to give you good mpg, they are designed to give you room, comfort, towing ability and driving off road.

You wouldn't buy a Mondeo to pull a twin axel caravan or go off roading just like you don't buy a Disco for the economy it's going to return.

Realistically, low to high (max) 20s is to be expected. I don't think many manage to reach a long term average of 30 or more. Depends on what your mileage consists of? Question

A remap, uprated intercooler and de-cat etc. can help with fuel economy, but how long before it pays for itself, I don't know - probably never (but still worth it Mr. Green ). I know it's possible to get a genuine 35 out of mine (on a very long motorway run) if I want to, but I'm almost never in a position to, and the average will always be a lot lower. Wink

The long and short of it is that if an average MPG of low-high (max) 20s is a problem, then the D3 is not the car for you. Thumbs Up

On two occasions, I've seen an indicated 41MPG from my 56MY D3, long motorway trips, just cruising along. also managed 32MPG pulling tin tent on the way down to Car Fest (aka Mud Fest), thanks mostly to the 50mph restriction on the M4 roadworks.

Best mod you can make to a D3 for MPG is to your right foot, accelerate and brake gently, learn to anticipate traffic lights etc. but I also believe the D3 benefits from the occasional Italian tune-up (and it does some to need it far more often when some muppet in a hot-hatch thinks he can jump me at the traffic lights)

BUT... how was it calculated?

I always calculate from brimmed tank to brimmed tank.

Mine over 70k miles 24.7 MPG, manual car with BAS remap.

Best full tank 28.8 MPG over 250 miles on autoroute in France early a.m.

Worst 20.9 over 162 miles, in heavy snow & very cold - so FBH on most of the time.

We seem to get around 24-26mpg the last tank returning 428 miles giving 24.3 this was all wee roads and stop starts. No motorways at all it has slightly improved with adding two stroke oil.and is better on a good run about 26.7. On an D3 auto hse MY06 so not too bad considering its near 3tonne Thumbs Up

Expect mid 20s, anything else is a bonus. And don't think any peak mpg means you'll get that as an average, you won't. My best is 36mpg, worst is 12mpg but average is 26.6mpg. If that worries you you're buying the wrong car. Thumbs Up

Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Excellent advice, cheers people. I'm looking at towing a caravan (ideally twin axle) too. I get the usual HMRC 45p/ mile for the first 10k then 25p for the rest so it's all about the cost and if I can keep the mpg, tax, servicing and insurance within that allowance. Gotta do some sums Shocked If it's a bit over I'd rather get the D3 anyway. It's all about enjoying your motor at the end of the day Very Happy Very Happy
Thanks to all Thumbs Up
