WINCH WIRING ISSUE...
Hi All,
I hope someone on here can help me.
Before I begin, I want to point out I HAVE used the search tool, read loads of old threads but still not managed to find the answer I'm looking for. Hence the post...
I've fitted a WARN Winch 9.5 XP. It is the genuine Land Rover part, with all the kit etc.
The wiring comes across initially as very simple, and I have the winch operating correctly both in and out! So no major dramas, except...
I have two wires, small diameter which come from the secondary winch plug loom. One is red (+) one is blue (-).
With both the red connected to positive and the blue earthed, on pressing the winch control button I get a loud relay click with no movement.
If I remove the red wire from positive and leave blue earthed I get nothing at all.
If I leave the red wire on 12v and then break the earth on the blue wire away from negative- the winch operates?
It would appear the red needs a constant 12v feed and then winch is then switched to (-) from the blue.
This seems very odd having a winch that is controlled by a switch breaking negative?
Any help from those more intelligent than me , as always would be hugely appreciated!
Thanks.

This may help?
The colour coding for Warn Winches is somewhat incredible ....how about this ....black is positive and red is negative...wtf!
To help others who may wish to add a wireless remote to a D3 2008 these are the colour codes:
Remote cable. ---------------- Winch cable.
Red. ..................................... White
Brown. .................................. Brown
Green. ..................................... Green
Orange. .................................. Black
Black. ....................................... Red/Orange
White. ............................................ Unused.
What the above relate to is when you try to join the wiring from the remote cable to the wiring direct from the winch itself.... You can see that you do not join the same coloured wires together...

Thanks a lot for the help guys!
I'm so shocked thats how you wire up a WARN winch! It just makes no logical sense!
If you weren't such a well respected forum member I'd think this was a wind up!
Are you sure red is earth and black is positive! I just find that bizarre?
I can't be the only one!

I was in exactly the same position as you! I had searched the forums and asked everyone who said it was easy.... I had the same issues as you...trying everything and eventually gave up and took it to Gigglepin, who are the world leaders in winch technologies...
I asked them to fit it instead and asked for the wiring diagram as to why I was going wrong! The above is what they gave me........ And it now works!
