Charging Battery on a D4?

Reading the manual it states that the battery must be removed from the vehicle and should be carried out by qualified personnel.

Really?

Why can't I plug my CTek onto the battery? I'm sure it will be fine unless someone can tell me otherwise. What would be the reason they say this? Are they just covering their Censored ?

Unless they've done something different with the MY16, you'll find we all charge our batteries in situ, without removing or disconnecting them.

The one thing to bear in mind is that you can connect the +ve of the charger directly to the +ve terminal of the battery, but the -ve must be connected to a good chassis/body ground rather than to the battery. By doing this, the BMS will know that the battery is being charged. Thumbs Up

I'm going to connect a CTek comfort cable to the battery so should I connect the -ve to the chassis somewhere?

Yes! If you've got towing electrics fitted, you can get yourself one of Martin's adapted leads and connect through the towing socket instead. I haven't got the electrics on mine yet, so I've connected the -ve to a ground post just next to the FBH. I've also extended the comfort socket so that it will sit just below the windscreen. Doing it that way means that I can see the battery condition and connect the CTEK without having to unlock the vehicle.

Thanks DD. That really helps.

I don't have the tow electrics yet but may put on at a later stage just to charge battery without opening car. I don't do that many miles and does sometimes sit doing nothing for quite a period of time.

I have a CTek XS3600 charger which has 2 modes.

Any advise on the one I should use for charging and maintenance?

This setting is recommended for batteries at temperatures
below 5°C. It is also recommended for many AGM batteries.
This setting is not recommended for maintenance charging

A kind of linked question, prompted by Dudleydisco's clear photos, if I may.

I'm thinking of putting in an Anderson connector, on a short lead, which could be used to jump start or very occaisionally used to run a trailer winch.

Would bolting it to those terminals, +ve on the battery, -ve on that chassis stud, be okay? It's an 09 Disco 3 by the way.

Any thoughts on an inline fuse?

Thanks for that link Steve.

I had seen that a while back, very neat and it's reminded me of a suitable fuse holder. It looks like Wiggs has taken the -ve to the stud by the FBH, I just wanted to be absolutely sure as it'll be taking a good few amps when in use.
