Help diagnosing faulty fuel gauge

Symptoms:

Fuel gauge reading 1/2
Stopped for dinner, on restarting fuel gauge now reading 3/4
Fuel gauge continued to drop from 3/4 in line with number of miles (150+) until it got to 1/2
Decided to fill-up to brim and it took 69 litres so obviously reading incorrect at 1/2 before fill-up

Fuel gauge now reads full which is correct but no can't trust it so any idea which component is faulty? Thumbs Up

Could be one of the sensors but wiring faults are more common, especially behind the front right wheel arch liner.
