Steering wheel play

All,

2006 Disco 3 V8 HSE.

I have almost a full inch of play in my steering wheel in either direction before the wheels actually turn. Is this a common problem? Any suggestions for a fix?

3 inches total is allowed with a pas box set up not sure whats allowed on steering rack?

Mine had a bit of play before I changed the lower steering UJ - but had been like it as long as I can remember - even was checked by the senior service chap and was compared to a new one (Was pretty much the same)

But in short, I would say an inch was too much. Thumbs Up Mark.

You can also get this with the lower suspension bushings shot, I had an inch or more of free play. I would also look at the inner / outer ball joints when you change that lower steering shaft.

Thank you everyone for your feedback.

The steering wheel play happens with the car off, and with the car on.

I gather then that about 1" play is within the specification...
