Tailgate release failure
Hi all. I have a 2009 Disco 3 and the well discussed and written about tailgate problem has now happened to me. So armed with all the posts I could find I embarked upon the fix. Unfortunately I have failed at the first hurdle having found that as I try and get to the actuator I have peeled back the carpet on the tailgate to reveal a hard backing which appears to be so solid and fitted well up into the plastic trim as to be near impossible to get out without breaking said trim. I can't find a specific answer to this issue anywhere on the forum and just wondered if any members could help out?
Cheers
You need to get a flat blade screwdriver or similar under the trim then carefully lever it out. If you're careful, it can be done without damaging it. its a really stiff piece of board, not flexible at all. tried with a screwdriver etc. but it won't budge. Seriously worried I will break trim but I guess if I do its not the end of the world!
It is stiff, but you just have to be tough with it and it will go. Current: Discovery 3 06MY (55 reg) HSE Auto Zambezi Silver Allisport Fast Road Intercooler, V8 Brakes, Silicone IC Hoses, EGRs Blanked, Remapped, De-Cat pipe, FBHIC

Did mine earlier this year and, yes, it is stiff. I used a couple of broad bladed chisels and it eventually popped free. I did get a small split in the trim but I can't even see it now.
As LfW says, just be tough with it.Arthur.

trim panel came off with the brute force and courage I got from you guys - many thanks.
Now need to decide if I am going to replace or repair the cable per Chocolademan advice.
Anyone know if I can buy the cable separately?
Thanks again for your help.

The cable comes with the actuator unfortunately ..
Not a bad idea to replace the actuator at the same time though. Current: Discovery 3 06MY (55 reg) HSE Auto Zambezi Silver Allisport Fast Road Intercooler, V8 Brakes, Silicone IC Hoses, EGRs Blanked, Remapped, De-Cat pipe, FBHIC

You are correct, I remember an electrical connector on it and taking the actuator box apart, that's where I got confused. I even had to go in the garage to find my old one to check

All done with a bodge for now.
Yes, if bodge doesn't work I'm in for a latch assembly - c. £65.
Also broke loom plug that goes into actuator (numpty!) so also bodged with insulating tape 'securing' it to actuator!
Tail gate trim left off in case (probably less 'in case' and more a certainty) bodges come apart.
I assume a new plug is a to source!
Thanks to all again.

I have the joy of replacing the cable and latch this weekend, but I saw this and it intrigued me. Do the actuators have a tendency to fail also?
