Another EGR question or two! Advice please

I had the orange engine management light (MIL?) appear earlier today on my MY08 auto and took it to my local Indy who read the code and diagnosed a faulty ( stuck open) EGR valve. - and sold me an EGR kit for me to fit and then rebook in for the software 'fix'. Codes reset and light extinguished. Drove it home and at first it was very sluggish pulling away and, as I usually drive with a light right foot, I gave it a bit of wellie and it seemed to respond better!. Been out in it tonight and it's been behaving perfectly.

So, is it possible to 'unstick' a valve by gunning it and, assuming that it will stick again, how difficult a job is blanking for an old timer to do?? Rolling Eyes
 Best Regards,
Dave.

The blanking kit installation is relatively straightforward, use this as a guide -

Later D3's (think it was 2007 model on that are Euro 4 compliant) need a software fix as well as blanking otherwise they'd fail the MOT for having a warning light on.

Thinking about doing this myself along with a BAS remap. Although Volkswagen apparently do remaps...

EGR valves are there to reduce the output of Nox gasses, particularly at high engine speed, low throttle settings such as when the engine is in a overrun situation. Nox gasses are pretty harmful so although I agree that blanking the EGR valves does improve the performance of the car should we really be poisoning our fellows? On a more practical note the VW issue is almost certain to result in more stringent emissions testing so people may find themselves having to undo EGR valve blanking and software modifications.

I would say blanking the egr does not in fact make the car run any different to normal unless it has an egr problem in the first place.

From my limited experience, yes you can sometimes unstick it (if it is not a mechanical failure of bearings etc).

I had a couple of MIL lights present, and clear, themselves over a few weeks. As a short term fix while waiting for time and an EGR to be delivered I tried an EGR cleaner (Wynns?) and Fuel system cleaner (BG244) and haven't had a recurrence for the last month or two. Meanwhile, the EGR I bought remains on the side waiting to be fitted when it does finally fail

As a bonus the cleaner/additive also made the accelerator response quicker and the engine sounded smoother so, for an investment of £20-£30 it may be worth trying.

It's also worth mentioning that I have an inbuilt distrust of 'snake oil' type additives so was not expecting too much success - the results were therefore a pleasant surprise!

Blanking greatly reduces particulate matter though, and of course CO2 emmissions, and improves engine (and maybe turbo) life, so there's a flip side to every coin...

Well after buying a blanking kit, I spoke with the dealer who sold me the D3 and he offered to get the EGRs replaced at 'trade rates' . Just collected it £450 lighter and 2 X Valeo valves fitted - but truck does feel so much more responsive!......... Seems though they took out the inner wheel arches to access the valves......is this the way?

Anyone want to buy a Britpart blanking kit lol!
 Best Regards,
Dave.
